From Filming to the Screen Other than camera angles, what are aspects of film that help create the mood ? *think of things that you would notice if they were missing from a movie.***

Learning Objective: To explore the use of sound in film.

Cinephile or Cenophoney? Play the Kahoot and see how many movies you can identify from their soundtracks.

Sound Diegetic sound Sound effects Dialogue Sound Track (non- instrumental) Sound Diegetic sound Non-diegetic sound Theme Song Musical Score

What did we test for in Kahoot? We were able to identify these movies based solely on a short sound bite from their soundtracks. Soundtracks fall under Non- Diegetic sound Non- Diegetic sound is anything that is recorded after filming and is layered onto the footage. IE: dubbed over dialogue, soundtracks, and sound effects

Foley Artists Foley Artists create sound effects that bring the action on screen to life. How could you make the sound of: a dog walking, a rain storm and feet stomping through snow with ordinary household objects?

The soundtrack of a film is a very complex mix of: dialogue recorded on location. dialogue recorded after filming, and dubbed in sync with the lip movement of the actors – virtually all the dialogue on major movies is post- synched in a dubbing studio to get a very clean high definition sound. diegetic sound or music. Sound or music that is recorded on location as it happens. non-diegetic sound or music. Pre-recorded music or sound that is added to the soundtrack during the audio editing process. sound effects (FX) - these may be recorded on location and added later or they may be created for a scene such as a gun shot, the sound of a man being punched, cars crashing etc. Hollywood does these extra sound FX in a Foley studio, which you can see working on a tour of Universal Studios –
