THE CIVIL WAR 1861-1865 WHO- North vs South, Union vs Confederacy, Blue vs Grey, Yankees vs Rebels FIRST SHOTS- On April 12, 1861 when the South attacked Fort Sumter off the coast of South Carolina.

ADVANTAGES: North South More people More Industry More Railroads Navy Defending their Homeland Better Soldier Skills Best Generals

STRATEGIES: South North Known as the “Anaconda Plan” 1- blockade all Southern Ports 2- Split the South into 2 by controlling the Mississippi River 3- Capture Richmond, VA (the South’s capital) Mostly Defensive

Key Events: Bull Run- 1st major battle of the war, the South won Battle of Antietam- single bloodiest day of the war, the North won (it would lead to Lincoln issuing the Emancipation Proclamation, & the South losing the support of Britain)

The Emancipation Proclamation- Jan 1, 1863 Lincoln freed slaves that were in the Confederate States. Its Importance: Though it didn’t end slavery, it showed that slavery’s days were numbered, and it opened the door for blacks to fight in the Union army.

Turning Point: Gettysburg (1863)- After the North defeats the South in this three day battle, The South will NEVER be able to bring the fighting to the North again! Lincoln puts Ulysses S. Grant in charge in 1864, the North implements the idea of “Total War”: bring the war to the civilians of the South to break their will!

Sherman’s March to the Sea- It’s an example of “Total War” Sherman’s March to the Sea- It’s an example of “Total War”. After Union General William Tecumseh Sherman burns Atlanta, his men then march through the South and destroy everything in their path (houses, livestock, railroads) In April 1865, the North captures Richmond (the capital of the South), the South surrenders on April 9 at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. The Civil War is over!

RESULTS OF THE WAR: Over 600,000 soldiers died The South’s economy was devastated while the North’s economy boomed. April 14, 1865- Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in Washington, D.C. By the end of 1865 the 13th Amendment which ended slavery was added to the Constitution.
