PIMPRI CHINCHWAD POLYTECHNIC PROGRAM: MECHANICAL ENGINEERING COURSE: AUTOMOBILE (17526)
5.Eletrical systems. CO501.1: Identify various components of Automobile. C501.4 : Describe battery constructional details, charging system, starting system, lighting system.
Electrical Systems
Function of battery: Battery supplies the current for cranking motor and ignition system when the engine is being cranked for starting. When the vehicle is stationary battery supplies electricity for operating the various electrical devices.
Construction: Battery consists of – Container, Positive and negative plates, Separators, Cell cover, Electrolyte, Grids, Cell connectors, Taper terminals, sealing compounds etc. Positive and negative plates are arranged alternately and separated by separators. Negative plates are surrounded by spongy lead paste and positive plates are surrounded by lead peroxide. The entire container of battery is filled with an electrolyte. All positive plates are connected to positive terminal and all negative plates are connected to negative terminal.
