Let Freedom Span Both East and West #148 Singing the Living Tradition Opening Hymn Let Freedom Span Both East and West Words: Jacob Trapp Music: African American spiritual Adapted by Harry T.Burleigh #148 Singing the Living Tradition

Let freedom span both east and west, and love both south and north, 1 Let freedom span both east and west, and love both south and north, in universal fellowship throughout the whole wide earth.

In beauty, wonder, every where, let us communion find, 2 In beauty, wonder, every where, let us communion find, compassion be the golden cord close binding humankind.

Beyond all barriers of race, of color, caste or creed, 3 Beyond all barriers of race, of color, caste or creed, let us make friendship, human worth, our common faith and deed.

Then east and west will meet and share, 4 Then east and west will meet and share, and south shall build with north, one human commonwealth of good throughout the whole wide earth.

Wherever men and women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must — at that moment — become the center of the universe. ― Elie Wiesel

We light this chalice to illuminate the center of the universe—those places where, in this moment, our kindred are being persecuted.

Go in love, our hearts go with you. Go in joy, our hopes go too. Learn in love and grow in wisdom. Shine your light in all you do.

President of ASUUC Board of Trustees Reading Dorrie Stewart President of ASUUC Board of Trustees

“Within a system which denies the existence of basic human rights, fear tends to be the order of the day. Fear of imprisonment, fear of torture, fear of death, fear of losing friends, family, property or means of livelihood, fear of poverty, fear of isolation, fear of failure. A most insidious form of fear is that which masquerades as common sense or even wisdom, condemning as foolish, reckless, insignificant or futile the small, daily acts of courage which help to preserve man's self-respect and inherent human dignity.

It is not easy for a people conditioned by fear under the iron rule of the principle that might is right to free themselves from the enervating miasma of fear. Yet even under the most crushing state machinery courage rises up again and again, for fear is not the natural state of civilized man.” ― Aung San Suu Kyi, Freedom from Fear

Our Rights. Our Freedom. Always Today’s Message Our Rights. Our Freedom. Always Rev. Nori Rost

President of ASUUC Board of Trustees Offertory Reading Dorrie Stewart President of ASUUC Board of Trustees

This is the true joy in life: The being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one. The being a force of nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. I am of the opinion that my whole life belongs to the community and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can.

I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no “brief candle” for me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations. – George Bernard Shaw.

The offering will now be joyfully given and gratefully received.

He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother Offertory Music He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother As performed by The Hollies Performed for us by Sharon Skidgel

Lyrics The road is long, with many a winding turn, That leads us to who knows where, who knows where. But I'm strong, strong enough to carry him; He ain't heavy, he's my brother. So on we go; His welfare is my concern. No burden is he to bear, we'll get there. For I know he would not encumber me;

Lyrics If I'm laden at all, I'm laden with sadness That everyone's heart isn't filled with the gladness Of love for one another. It's a long, long road, From which there is no return. While we're on our way to there, why not share? And the load doesn't weigh me down at all; He ain't heavy, he's my brother.

Closing Words Rev. Dr. Nori Rost

Freedom means the supremacy of human rights everywhere Freedom means the supremacy of human rights everywhere. Our support goes to those who struggle to gain those rights and keep them. Our strength is our unity of purpose. To that high concept there can be no end save victory.” ― Franklin D. Roosevelt

When All the Peoples on This Earth Closing Hymn When All the Peoples on This Earth words : Anonymous Music: Betty Jo Angebranndt #147 in Singing the Living Tradition

When all the peoples on this earth 1 When all the peoples on this earth know deep inside their precious worth, when every single soul is free, We’ll earn the name Humanity.

The choice to be the best we can begins the day we say, "I am." 2 The choice to be the best we can begins the day we say, "I am." The unity for which we sigh will never come through hate or lie.
