Fabrics Blends, Knits, Weaves
Get ready for Class.... Take out portfolio Obtain 2 handouts Get ready to take some notes Obtain 2 handouts One White- warp One Blue- weft Blue: Cut out all the ½” strips of blue White: Cut all the way up the white lines (stopping at the line where it says “Name” & “Type of Weave”
Yarns Yarn- Fibres that have been overlapped and twisted together This has been going on for thousands of years! (probably more!) A blend is a yarn made from two or more different fibres It can be a blend of natural fibres, synthetic fibres, or both together. For Example- You may own a t-shirt with a blend- 60% cotton, 40% polyester The cotton will give it comfort and good looks The polyester will make it more wrinkle free
Fabrics Fabric is also called material, or cloth Is it what your clothes are made of Most fabrics are made by weaving or knitting yarns or by matting fabrics together
Knits Fabrics made by looping strands of yarn together row after row with special needles. Most knitting today is done by machine Knitting is mostly done with a single strand of yarn Think of people knitting at home- 2 needles and a ball of yarn Knits are comfortable because they can stretch with movement and return to original shape. Hardly wrinkle.
Woven Fabrics Weaving is the interlocking of strands of yard to form fabric The Warp- one set of yarn- is lined up in lengthwise rows on a loom The weft/filling- another set of yarn passed over and under these rows in a crosswise direction There are 3 types of weaves
Fabrics are most often woven on industrial looms Each type of weave produces a different fabric Woven fabrics hold their shape and are typically strong (compared to knits)
Plain Weave Each weft passes over and under each warp yarn The most simple weave Can be sheer and fragile, or heavy and sturdy- depends on the fibre you use and tightness of weave
Twill Weave Each weft yard passes over at least two, but not more than four, warp yarns. This action produces a diagonal line Noted for its strength & durability- ex. Jeans- denim
Satin Weave Each weft yarn passes over four or more warp yarns Produces a fabric with shine Fabrics with satin weaves- Ex- acetate and satin Used in bridal gowns, evening wear, dresses and blouses
Upcoming Project You will create a weave using a cardboard loom and many different yarns The idea is to produce a square/rectangle shaped weave Possible uses: wash cloth, doily, place mat
Today’s Activity Portfolio Requirement #4 Create a weave of your choice Be sure to put your name on it AND the type of weave Example below- Plain weave
