Pre-Writing Techniques A diagram for a sequence of events: for example, when describing things which happen/ will happen in a story; a process or procedure 1. Chain Title – CHAIN WRITING  By – Sharon Hargis  Subject – Language Arts  Grade Level – 5-8  MATERIALS: -Photographs (clipped from magazines or books)  -Blank paper attached to photographs  -Pens  - Music PROCEDURES: Groups of four  Each group is given a photograph of an interesting scene or situation. When music begins, first student begins to write a narrative prompted by the photograph. After a few minutes, the music is stopped and the story that student 1 began is read by 2nd student. The music is turned back on and the 2nd student picks up story where the first student left off. This procedure continues around the group until all have had a turn. Last student in the group should attempt to end the tale. PUBLISHING: Each student in the group reads aloud to the class the part of the story they have written. NOTE: Depending on the age group, the teacher may need to add an additional sheet of paper to make sure students have plenty of space to write their part of the story.

Pre-Writing Techniques (6) “Journalist questions” are the “5Ws and the 1H”—who, what, when, where, and especially why and how. The who, what, when, and where are relevant to summaries while the how and why prompt you to examine the “so what?!” Use ideas from the text, your freewrite and your brainstorm and form them into questions. Through answering these questions, you can discover interesting information that you can use for writing. 6. Journalist
