CAUSES | SYMPTOMS |DIAGNOSIS | TREATMENT CUTIS LAXA CAUSES | SYMPTOMS |DIAGNOSIS | TREATMENT

INTRODUCTION TO CUTIS LAXA A rare disorder of connective tissue that causes the skin to stretch easily and hang in loose folds. In cutis laxa, the elastic fibers contained in the connective tisse become loose. Sometimes only the skin is affected, but connective tisses throughout the body can be affected. Cutis laxa is usually hereditary In some kinds of cutis laxa, the abnormal genes cause problems unrelated to connective tissues - for example, mental retardation. Cutis laxa can be mild, affecting only a person's appearance, or severe, affecting the internal organs. The skin may be very loose at birth, or it may become loose later.

CAUSES OF CUTIS LAXA The following are the causes of the Cutis Laxa The exact cause of Cutis Laxa is not known. However, in most of the cases Cutis Laxa is inherited. The absence of elastin fiber in the skin and various mutations in genes may cause Cutis Laxa. Mutation in the genes such as ELN, ATP7A, FBLN4, PYCR1, and FBLN5 may cause Cutis Laxa.

SYMPTOMS OF CUTIS LAXA The signs and symptoms of Cutis Laxa vary according the severity of the condition. Consult a dermatologist immediately if you experience any of these symptoms. Common signs and symptoms of Cutis Laxa include:  Inelastic skin Loose folds on the body Ruptured skin vessels Wrinkles around neck, groin and armpits Hernia Bleeding under the skin Swelling Stretching of ligaments and tendons Weak bones Irregular heart beat

DIAGNOSIS OF CUTIS LAXA A dermatologist will start the diagnosis of Cutis Laxa by performing a physical exam and asking about your medical history. After this, he may order a diagnostic test to get detailed information about the condition. Diagnostic tests for Cutis Laxa may include: Blood test Urine test ECG to check for link with cardiac problems Chest X-ray to check for link with lung problems Electrophoresis Skin biopsy

TREATMENT OF CUTIS LAXA The treatment of Cutis Laxa depends on the severity of the symptoms. Dermatologist may prescribe medicines such as beta-blockers and dapsone to prevent aortic aneurysms and to alleviate the pain and discomfort. Patient with Cutis Laxa should avoid smoking and going out in the sun. Botulinum injections can be given to improve facial defects and the premature aging. Excessive loose skin can be corrected with cosmetic surgery. However, there is no specific medicine that can completely cure or prevent the symptoms related with Cutis Laxa.
