Theme Question: What do my roles say about me? What roles, or jobs, do you have at home? At school? In your community? How will your roles change as you get older? What kind of roles would you like to have?

Theme Vocabulary Roles are different parts that people play. Example: The role of a teacher is to help students learn. The role of a student is to work hard, have fun, and learn. Change is to become different. Example: Each fall, the leaves on the trees change color. Leader is a person in charge. Example: The president is the leader of the United States.

Prepare to Read You Can Count on Me -nonfiction book, gives real information about people, places, and things. Which roles in the photos could you have in your home? (pgs. 4-5) What are some roles you have at home that are not chores? How will this chapter help answer the Theme Question: What do my different roles say about me? Preview and predict Read pages 3-11

Writing Traits Read Writing Models Chart p. 2 Ideas: The heart of the message and the details that tell about it. Example 1: I like winter. Winter is my favorite season. Winter is more fun than fall. Spring is okay. Summer is okay. Winter is better. Example 2: I like winter because of the snow. It’s fun to fall into fresh snow and make snow angels. I also like to sled down the hill in the park. Last year my friends and I built a snow fort and had snowball fights. I even like to shovel snow. Which example do you like better? Why?

Writing Traits Organization: The way ideas are organized, or put in order. Has a clear beginning, middle, and end. Example 1: I like to walk our dog, Max. Max is a small dog, but he is strong. On our walk this morning, he kept stopping to sniff everything. He loves to run, so I had to hold the leash tightly. When we got close to the house, he knew his breakfast was waiting. Example 2: Max liked playing catch. When I woke up this morning, my dog wanted to go out and play. I told him we would play catch after breakfast. Which example is easier to understand?

Writing Ideas Interesting ideas I may write about: - swimming - summer - silverware - Fourth of July celebration - shoelaces - the first day of school Are there any ideas that might be boring or may not have enough information about them? Now it’s your turn, jot some interesting ideas down in your writers notebook.
