Living The 10 Commandments Way Reading: Exodus 20 v 1-17

Children – expected to obey parents, teachers etc Sports & Games - have rules to abide by Driving – rules of the road Work – policies and procedures we are supposed to adhere to Legal - laws of the land

Why do we have rules? Genesis 2 v 15-17 One rule – don’t eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil Consequences for disobedience? Death!

The 10 Commandments - Exodus 20 You shall have no other gods before me You shall not make for yourself a carved image You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy Honour your father and mother You shall not murder You shall not commit adultery You shall not steal You shall not bear false witness You shall not covet your neighbours possessions

Why should we be interested in the 10 commandments? We can be God’s chosen people – his sons and daughters Romans 8 v 12-17 We can be his children by being led by the spirit – by following his commands

Suffering with Christ Romans 6 v 1-4 Baptism – symbol of being buried with Christ Rise from the water – have a responsibility to ‘walk in newness of life’

What did Jesus say about the commandments? Which is the greatest? Matthew 22 v 34-40 Firstly – love God with all your heart, soul and mind Secondly – love others as you love yourself

Loving others Matthew 5 v 38-48 Go the extra mile – not just for those we love but also our enemies Not easy – what if we fail? God will forgive us – but need to keep trying

The Lord’s Prayer - forgiveness Matthew 6 v 9-15 Forgive us as we forgive others – God’s forgiving of us requires us to be forgiving of others Our undeserved reward – eternal life in God’s Kingdom!

Conclusion Should do our best to follow 10 commandments Summarised by Jesus as 2 commandments Put God first in our lives Show love to others Show forgiveness and we will be forgiven Look forward to glorious kingdom to come on the Earth

2nd John v 5-6 Now I plead with you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we have had from the beginning; that we love one another. This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.
