I have 3 wonderful children (ages 21, 18, and 13). I also have a cute little dog, April. I love teaching, reading, and hiking. This is my 23 year working with kids. Mrs. Short is from Georgia. Go Dawgs and Yellow Jackets! She has a wonderful husband, two great sons, and a new daughter-in-law. She also has a cute dog whose name is Callie. She loves reading, hiking and tennis. This is her 20th year at East Side.

Focus on the positive. All children learn differently and at different rates – we all reach the finish line, just not at the same time. Teach everything!

We want to create a happy, safe environment! Positive Discipline is used in our classroom. We teach the “I” statement. We believe in Natural Consequences. We communicate daily through our weekly Communication Sheet. We have high expectations for behavior in our classroom.

We highly suggest that your child rides the bus to school We highly suggest that your child rides the bus to school. You can’t be late if you ride the bus and we will not be extending tardies this year. What to bring: bookbag, sport-top water bottle, Communication Folder, change of clothes in a ziplock baggie, healthy snack, pillowcase, and a smile! Please label, label, label – EVERYTHING! Remember… the bus is fun! Just ask the pigeon.

If you have a child with an allergy, please send in treats we can keep in the classroom – just in case. If there is any question about the safety of the food, we will always err on the side of caution. If your child has a food allergy, please fill out an Allergy Form located on the back table.

If your child is ill, please send in a written excuse the next day. If you child is tardy (after 7:50am), he/she must check in at the parent volunteer desk. Please do not send your student to school if he/she has had a fever, thrown up, or has had diarrhea within the last 24 hours. The 3/5/10 policy is not as scary as it seems.

We have a standards-based report card: 3 = meets standards 2 = progressing towards the standard 1 = limited progress

EIP – Early Intervention Program This program is designed to lower the Student-Teacher Ratio and catch kids up that need a little extra help. ELL – English Language Learners This program is for students which have English as a second language. It helps teach children English skills in a language rich environment. Kindergarten has a new Readiness Assessment that you will receive at the end of August.

Student Lunches - $2.35 Adult lunches - $3.75 Milk - $.60 Ice Cream - $1.00 We encourage you to join your child for lunch starting in a couple of weeks. You can meet us upstairs at the Cafeteria door. There is a visitor’s table for you and your child. No fast food, please. Fridays are Ice Cream/Extra Days. Please sign up tonight if you would like your child to buy ice cream on Fridays. You can prepay on line at cobbk12.org or send in a check in an envelope with your child’s name and classroom teacher. If your child has allergies and/or special restrictions, please notify us, Nurse Shannon, and our Cafeteria Manager, Mrs. Cronk.

Kinderkeys homework will begin in August. Reading Folders will start upon completion. Please note –Words of the Week are located at the top of the Communication Sheet. Don’t forget to keep reading for pleasure. Our goal is to create Avid, Life-long readers!

Each child will have his/her opportunity to SHINE! Monday – Send in a poster about your child. Tuesday – Bring home the Class Chameleon, Star, for a visit. Students will write about their adventure with Star. Don’t worry, no insects needed. Wednesday – Send in a short, but loved, book to share. Thursday – Star comes back to school with his Journal about their adventure. You can also put a Show and Tell item in the bag to share. Friday – Parents come in for lunch and are our Guest Readers. ALL Transportation changes must be in WRITING on a regular sized piece of paper sent in the Communication Folder. Please sign and date it. No emails or phone calls, please. Bus changes must be on the form in your packet. If you need to check your child out, please do so before 1:45pm.

Leave your child a love note on the heart paper located at his/her seat. Please leave a payment for your student’s class shirt. Sigh-up to receive Posts on our Blog.
