The IB Mission: The IB aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect…these programmes encourage students across the world to become active compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences can also be right.

Agenda Welcome What is IB? Core Components Program Offerings Assessment, Evaluation, & Conversion Why IB? Student Voices Questions

What is IB? The International Baccalaureate Organization was created in 1965 in Geneva, Switzerland Comprehensive two-year university prepatory program Allows graduates to fulfill OSSD requirements Students study six subjects giving them a well-rounded education in the humanities & sciences Korah became recognized as an IB World School in July of 2003 2019 will mark our 14th graduating class 

The IB Diploma Programme Model

At the centre of the Programme is the Learner Profile: The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. As IB learners we strive to be: Inquirers * Open-minded Knowledgeable * Caring Thinkers * Risk-Takers Communicators * Balanced Principled * Reflective

The IB Core: Theory of Knowledge Extended Essay: Offered as a grade twelve course, TOK provides an opportunity for students to reflect on the nature of knowledge, gain awareness of their personal biases, and gain an appreciation for the diversity of perspectives in their own classroom and in society as a whole. Creativity, Action & Service: CAS is the heart of IB, emphasizing the importance of developing students who are reflective, willing to accept new challenges, aware of their responsibilities to their communities and the environment, and able to collaborate with others. Accumulation of CAS hours begins in the fall of grade 11. Extended Essay: A university level paper of 4000 words, each student chooses a subject, topic, and is assigned a mentor who helps guide the writing process over the 10 month process.

Korah’s IB Program We offer the following courses, three at Higher Level (HL) and three at the Standard Level (SL): English Literature (HL) French (SL) History (HL) Chemistry (HL) Mathematics (SL) Choice of Music, Computer Science or Biology (SL)

Assessment: As students earn two diplomas, they are assessed in both Ontario and International systems. 70 % of mark is based on work throughout the semester; 30% is based on summative assessment(s) IB assessed items are assigned a level on IB Grade boundaries (7 point scale), then converted to a percentage grade This conversion is standardized for all Ontario IB Schools Non-IB assessments (e.g. quizzes, unit tests, reviews) are assessed as per OSSD guidelines Final assessments (mock exams) help prepare students for final IB exams Students earn a predicted IB grade and their final Ontario transcript reflects whichever is higher – predicted or actual grade

IBSO (International Baccalaureate Schools of Ontario Conversion Scale): IB Grade Ontario Percentage 7 = 97 to 100% 6 = 93 to 96% 5 = 84 to 92% 4 = 72 to 83% 3 = 61 to 71% 2 = 50 to 60%

Why IB? Highly regarded & internationally recognized, being offered in 140+ countries Students in IB have higher grades, on average, than their peers in the “same” courses in non-IB courses Universities want IB Diploma Programme graduates as students have knowledge, creativity, research skills, global perspective, work ethic, time management and organizational skills Most students earn transfer credits at university Students achievement & effort is recognized in entrance scholarships & awards

Is IB for you? Students interested in IB should be…. Hardworking and engaged in learning Achieving average to above average grades Looking for a well-rounded education Interested in becoming active in arts, athletics & their community Committed to attending classes every day Comfortable in independent & group learning environments Looking for challenging programs

Parents/guardians should be… Actively involved in and supportive of your child’s education Supportive when your child experiences the ‘peaks and valleys’ of high school Prepared to set aside a dedicated study area in your home Aware of your child’s progress, successes, and difficulties In communication with subject teachers for subject concerns In contact with the IB coordinator for other concerns

Common myths & FAQ’s: I’m not smart enough for IB…. There is no time for extra curriculars, out of school interests, or part time jobs…. I can’t handle the stress of the programme… I’m not good enough in _____________..... This isn’t the program for me if I don’t want to pursue science or math…. There are no real advantages to being in IB…
