Robbery vs. Larceny Robbery is forcible stealing. A person forcibly steals property and commits robbery when, in the course of committing a larceny, he uses or threatens the immediate use of physical force upon another person. Larceny is the stealing of property (without force)

Characteristics of Robbery Robbery is a planned crime 50% involves more then one perpetrator Repeat offenders or record of violence

Why Are You Likely to Get Robbed Location appears an easy target! Cash on property Staff ALONE Good Get-A-Way Potential Poor lighting after Dark Street View Obscured Location isolated from public/neighbors

What to do During a Robbery TAKE NO ACTION TO JEOPARDIZE YOUR SAFETY #1 GOAL IS TO GET THE ROBBER OUT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND SURVIVE THE ROBBERY WITH NO INJURY

What to do During a Robbery Cooperate with the Robber Remain Calm Give them exactly what they want WEAPONS or implied weapons should be treated as REAL and LOADED Do Not make loud noises or sudden moves Try to safely alert other employees (panic button/alarm, if equipped)

What to do During a Robbery DO NOT: Don’t argue or fight with the robber. Any amount of money is not worth personal injury. Don’t try to persuade the robber to give himself/herself up. Once a robbery has started, it is too late for a robber to change his/her mind. Don’t chase or follow the robber. Police could mistake you for the robber.

What to do During a Robbery Carefully observe the ROBBER, make eye contact and mental notes on appearance Look for accomplices Observe and Identify Weapon Remember – consider all weapons real and loaded! Make mental notes of weapon- TYPE,SIZE and COLOR

What to do After the Robbery Lock all the doors Do not chase or follow the robber Notify Security Stop all business transactions Ask all witnesses to stay until Police arrive DO NOT touch anything in the Robbery area Curious people can destroy EVIDENCE Do Not allow clients, staff, media into location until Security/Law Enforcement arrives

What to do After the Robbery A manager or responsible employee should assign “post- robbery” duties, Team Work: Someone to lock the doors Someone to call the police (if they have not been called already) Someone to move clients/staff away from affected areas
