What is this unit about? This unit explores the philosophy of conflict resolution as understood and presented by Nobel Laureate John Hume. Major principles of conflict resolution are explored in the context of the Troubles in Ireland.

Aims of the Unit To appreciate conflict resolution as a major approach to conflict To discover the differences between conflict management and conflict resolution To understand the role of conflict resolution in international settings

What You Will Learn The basics of nonviolent conflict resolution How attempts at conflict resolution were successful in Ireland Unacceptable approaches to conflict

2.1 John Hume’s Philosophy of Conflict Resolution

The Philosophy of Conflict Resolution Click on this link (1:11:38) to watch John Hume’s lecture, “The Philosophy of Conflict Resolution,” delivered on October 15, 2001, at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. You may wish to take notes while watching the video.

2.2 Application of Hume’s Philosophy

Reflection Paper Directions: After having watched ALL segments of the video, reflect upon and then answer the following questions in a document (Suggested length – 2pages): What is conflict resolution? What are Dr. Hume’s three principles? How do they relate to conflict resolution? How successful was Dr. Hume’s approach to conflict resolution in Ireland? How do Dr. Hume’s words relate to the situation in your own country?

2.3 Local Group Discussion

Local Discussion Share the ideas from your reflection paper on Dr. Hume’s lecture video that you completed in section 2.2 with other students in your group meeting.

Unit Summary This unit provided basic information about nonviolent conflict resolution and focused on Ireland as an example. Students may wish to apply John Hume’s three principles for conflict resolution to their own countries.
