CESB16 – June 23, 2016, Prague, Josef Mik, Marketing Manager CZ/SK, ROCKWOOL, a.s Contributing to a Circular Economy by putting zero waste and resource efficiency in the focus Josef Mik, Marketing Manager CZ/SK Agnes Schuurmans, Sustainability Manager, Group

CESB16 – June 23, 2016, Prague, Josef Mik, Marketing Manager CZ/SK, ROCKWOOL, a.s How does the world’s leading supplier of innovative stone wool products contribute to a circular economy? ROCKWOOL analyses: the recyclability of its own products, the recycled content and the scarcity of the primary raw materials because all 3 need to be analysed together in order to move towards a circular economy. ROCKWOOL uses per year approx.: 1.7 Mt abundantly available stone (Mt = megatons = 106 metric tons) In the same period of time the earth produces 100.000 Mt[1] 0.5 Mt secondary mineral sources with 2.2 Mt ROCKWOOL produces >250 Mm3 insulation products [1] Dahl, T. W. (2011) ”The human impact on natural rock reserves by using basalt, anorthosite and carbonates as raw materials in insulation products” The first stone wool production started in Hedehusene near Copenhagen, Denmark in 1937. The founders started other companies already in 1909.

CESB16 – June 23, 2016, Prague, Josef Mik, Marketing Manager CZ/SK, ROCKWOOL, a.s How to choose the application for a recycled material that supports the zero waste goal the most? The system (e.g. closed loop) in which a recycled material exists and other reuse options of a recycled material need to be analysed in order to supports the zero waste goal the most[2]. Using non-scarce raw materials combined with secondary material that would otherwise be landfilled, can be environmentally preferable over using 100% secondary material that would be reused anyhow. [2] adapted from McLanaghan, 2015 “European Resource Strategy and supporting Resource Hierarchy” Discussion Paper The first stone wool production started in Hedehusene near Copenhagen, Denmark in 1937. The founders started other companies already in 1909.

Saving from the use of ROCKWOOL products CESB16 – June 23, 2016, Prague, Josef Mik, Marketing Manager CZ/SK, ROCKWOOL, a.s Recycled content is one indicator, not a goal in itself and not an environmental impact such as climate change or resource scarcity ROCKWOOL contribution to climate protection[3] is approx.: 3 Mt CO2 emissions per year (cradle-to-gate) 200 Mt CO2 savings per year 1500 pay-back over the lifetime [3] PwC 2016 Large positive carbon handprinting Saving from the use of ROCKWOOL products The first stone wool production started in Hedehusene near Copenhagen, Denmark in 1937. The founders started other companies already in 1909. Small negative carbon footprint
