BELL WORK (Buff Binder): Copy the question below and write your answers: When you finish, set up your journal page for today: Page: 78 Date: 3/28/16 Title: Carbon and Nitrogen Cycle Essential Question: Why are the Carbon and Nitrogen Cycles Important? What is ecology?

Nitrogen Cycle Reading 1. Why do plants and animals need nitrogen? 2. What is nitrogen Fixation and why is it important? 3. How do animals get their nitrogen? 4. How do plants get their nitrogen? 5. What happens to the nitrogen in organisms after they die? 6. How are humans affecting the nitrogen cycle?

Amino acids & proteins in organisms Nitrogen Cycle N2 in atmosphere Amino acids & proteins in organisms

CHANGING the form of Nitrogen ADDING Nitrogen REMOVING Nitrogen CHANGING the form of Nitrogen DISRUPTIONS to the Nitrogen Cycle IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER!! Fertilizers Animal waste Decomposition Nitrogen-fixing bacteria on legume roots & in soil Plants take it in, and animals eat the plants Nitrogen fixation (turning nitrogen into a usable form) Denitrification (removing nitrates from the soil Overusing fertilizers Excessive livestock farming Crucial to life Found in DNA & proteins Makes up78% of our atmosphere Not usable straight from the atmosphere

Carbon Cycle

Cole and the Carbon Cycle

Fill in your chart… Look at the arrows on your picture…what ADDS carbon to the atmosphere? What REMOVES carbon from the atmosphere? DISRUPTIONS (these are things that keep the cycle from working smoothly) Burning fossil fuels (taken from the ground) Deforestation (cutting down trees) IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER!! Once carbon is removed from the ground, you can’t put it back!

Exit Ticket (on the back of your passport): Write one way carbon is ADDED to the environment. Write one way carbon is REMOVED from the atmosphere. Write one way the carbon cycle can be DISRUPTED.
