Designing and Improving Language Programs

Riverview International Academy If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart. Nelson Mandela

Why Immersion? JOEY OLYMPIA LEAH

Rationale for Dual Language Education Knowledge learned through one language facilitates acquisition of second language Students will benefit and have cognitive advantages due to the development of bilingualism and biliteracy

Three Central Goals of ALL Dual Language Programs Bilingualism: Students will develop high levels of proficiency in English and a partner language Biliteracy: Students will develop high levels of academic achievement in English and a partner language (at or above grade level) Multicultural competence: Students will demonstrate positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors and develop high self esteem

Language, Literacy, and Academics Why is oral proficiency important to us? Academics

How Do We Create Collective Efficacy? Context for this presentation No shared definition for IT Services   Problem Statement Lack of understanding and clarity between roles (e.g., service owner, service manager) Lack of tools and sills Constrained resources (limited bandwidth)

Consistent Student Outcomes Context for this presentation No shared definition for IT Services   Problem Statement Lack of understanding and clarity between roles (e.g., service owner, service manager) Lack of tools and sills Constrained resources (limited bandwidth)

Designing Immersion Programs Why do we do immersion? What are the promises we’ve made? How do we know we are keeping them? How good are our students now and how do we know that? What evidence do we have that our students get better in the target language each year? Turn and talk with partner One big idea you heard from your partner

Paying Attention to Language Academic rigor Coherence within program and continuous progress toward goals Accountability to parents and evidence to district leaders

K-12 PROFICIENCY TARGETS

Program Goals High levels of proficiency in English High levels of proficiency in the partner (non-English) language Academic performance (including biliteracy) at or above expectation Cross cultural competence Do you measure outcomes for all of these goals? If not, how can you say your program is successful?
