Year 7 & 8 Middle and Upper Band Year 7 & 8 Fast Track Year 7 & 8 High Achievers Year 9 & 10 Middle and Upper Band Year 9 & 10 Fast Track Year 9 & 10 High Achievers

Year 7 & 8 Middle and Upper Band Mathematical Ages Here are the dates of three pivotal female mathematicians…… Sophie Germain 1776 – 1831 Sonja Kowalevsky 1850 – 1891 Emmy Noether 1882 – 1935 Arrange them in order, with the shortest lived first! Get them to use substitution to work out the difference in the years. They can if they like use the chunking method. Once they have worked out how long each person lived they can order them. ANSWER: Sonja lived for 41 years Emmy lived for 53 years Sophie lived for 55 years

Year 7 & 8 Fast track Firstly do multiples of 12: 12,24,36,48,60,72,84 to work out the number of packs needed. You need 7 packs as 6 in not enough. 7 x £25.95 = £181.65 Encourage them to use the column or grid method.

Year 7 & 8 High Achievers Tick Tock…. Tick's watch runs 2 minutes per hour too slow. Tock's watch runs 1 minute per hour too fast. They set them to the same time at noon on Sunday. The next time they met, one of the watches was one hour ahead of the other. What was the earliest time this could have been? ANSWER 8 am on Monday. Each hour, Tock's watch gains three minutes on Tick's watch. It will, therefore, take 20 hours before it is one hour ahead of it.

Year 9 & 10 Middle and Upper Band Firstly do multiples of 12: 12,24,36,48,60,72,84 to work out the number of packs needed. You need 7 packs as 6 in not enough. 7 x £25.95 = £181.65 Encourage them to use the column or grid method.

Year 9 & 10 Fast Track Tick Tock….

Year 9 & 10 High Achievers Flower Show…. It takes four gardeners four hours to dig four circular flower beds, each of diameter four metres. How long will it take six gardeners to dig six circular flower beds, each of diameter six metres? ANSWER: 9 hours. time taken to dig a bed of diameter six metres 62 = 32 = 9 time taken to dig a bed of diameter four metres 42 = 22 = 4 Hence the time taken for one gardener to dig a bed of diameter six metres is  9 4 ×4hours=9hours The time taken for six gardeners to dig six flower beds is the same as the time it takes one gardener to dig one bed of the same size, and hence the answer is 9 hours.
