*Definition* Adverbs vs. Adjectives Adjectives ONLY modify nouns!!! Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or another adverb!!! Bubba talks carelessly. (adverb) Bubba is careless. (adjective) Bubba was extremely happily waiting. (adverb)

*Helpful Hints* Adjectives always follow a sense verb. (feel, taste, smell, sound, look, appear, seem) Sharon’s cough sounds bad. The ocean air smells fresh. Adjectives always follow a form of the verb, to be when it modifies the noun before the verb. I was nervous She has been sick all week.

Adverbs answer: Where, when, in what way (how), to what extent (how far, how much, to what degree

*Examples* In What Way? (how) When? Where? To What Extent? She ran quickly Drive by tonight You can park anywhere here The shirt seems extremely expensive She talked softly Visit before the game We will move forward I am very sorry She reasonably chose an answer You can go first Please, sit anywhere That is quite small

*More Examples* Athletes vigorously train for sports. A very large crowd watched us. We had waited quite patiently for you.
