1 Who is this who comes from Edom (red), with garments of glowing colors from Bozrah (gather grapes), this One who is majestic in His apparel, marching in the greatness of His strength? “It is I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save.” 2 Why is Your apparel red, and Your garments like the one who treads in the wine press? 3 “I have trodden the wine trough alone, and from the peoples there was no man with Me. I also trod them in My anger and trampled them in My wrath; and their lifeblood is sprinkled on My garments, and I stained all My raiment. 4 “For the day of vengeance was in My heart, and My year of redemption has come. 5 “I looked, and there was no one to help, and I was astonished and there was no one to uphold; so My own arm brought salvation to Me, and My wrath upheld Me. 6 “I trod down the peoples in My anger and made them drunk in My wrath , and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

Examples of how God’s wrath is demonstrated 1. Gen 6:5 “Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

Examples of how God’s wrath is demonstrated Gen 6:5 Gen 18:20 “And the Lord said, “The outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah is indeed great, and their sin is exceedingly grave.””

Examples of how God’s wrath is demonstrated Gen 6:5 Gen 18:20 Ex 12:29-30 “29 Now it came about at midnight that the Lord struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt … 30 Pharaoh arose in the night, he and all his servants and all the Egyptians, and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was no home where there was not someone dead.”

Examples of how God’s wrath is demonstrated Gen 6:5 Gen 18:20 Ex 12:29-30 Isa 37:36 “36 Then the angel of the Lord went out and struck 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians; and when men arose early in the morning, behold, all of these were dead.”

Examples of how God’s wrath is demonstrated Gen 6:5 Gen 18:20 Ex 12:29-30 Isa 37:36 Nu 14:32 “32 But as for you, your corpses will fall in this wilderness. 33 Your sons shall be shepherds for forty years in the wilderness, and they will suffer for your unfaithfulness, until your corpses lie in the wilderness.”

QUESTION: “Why must there be God’s wrath and why the wrath of God can be carried out in such seemingly cruel manner? How can a loving God be so cruel, so full of anger, so full of wrath?”

“The wrath of God is His eternal detestation of all unrighteousness “The wrath of God is His eternal detestation of all unrighteousness. It is the displeasure and indignation of Divine equity against evil. It is the holiness of God stirred into activity against sin. It is the moving cause of that just sentence which He passes upon evil-doers. God is angry against sin because it is a rebelling against His authority, a wrong done to His inviolable sovereignty. Insurrectionists against God’s government shall be made to know that God is the Lord. They shall be made to feel how great that Majesty is which they despise, and how dreadful is that threatened wrath which they so little regarded. Not that God’s anger is a malignant and malicious retaliation, inflicting injury for the sake of it, or in return for injury received. No; while God will vindicate His dominion as Governor of the universe, He will not be vindictive.”A. W. Pink, The Attributes of God, 76.

“Divine wrath is God’s righteous anger and punishment, provoked by sin but not exercised in sin (italics added).” Robert L. Deffinbaugh Let Me See Thy Glory, 84

Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness (NIV “godlessness”) and unrighteousness (NIV “wickedness”) of men.
