How it began … Some members of the community realized that due to a variety of circumstances related to age, a new group of Muslims with special characteristics is evolving. This group is both a resource for the community as well as a responsibility of the community. These members initiated a program to bring together senior Muslims in the ADAMS community, who were retired or semi-retired and were over the age of 60.

Organization The Seniors Friday Group started meeting in April 2011. The Group meets every Friday for about 75 minutes before the first Jumu’a prayer at ADAMS Center. The Group started with eight persons and has increased to twenty five or so persons, most of whom attend fairly regularly.

Activities Occasional family get-together with children and grand-children invited, to encourage inter-generational bonding. Monthly group bring-a-dish breakfast at regular meeting time. Presentation by experts on a variety of seniors’ interests. Volunteering for the community. Discussions about elder issues at conferences.

Seniors as resource Funding for medical testing equipment. Food bags for the needy in Ramadan (with another group). Scholarships to a student. Organizing occasional activities at ADAMS Center. More ideas being developed …

Seniors as responsibility Example: One sister in the group became disabled and dependent on the community. Example: Concern about seniors driving at night and long-distances. Education about health and financial issues. More ideas being developed …
