Mumbai, India Presentation by Samantha Knight Contrasting Slums and Dreamworlds Making this comparison allowed to gain a more complex understanding of my city because it allowed me to experience empathy. Filling in the map of the world. Dharavi Location - Train tracks, right next to "civil" society. Plans for reconstruction. Removal of homes and people (Slums) to make room for something more economically beneficial (Dreamworlds) -- walking the line. http://images.businessweek.com/ss/09/03/0304_difficult_cities/6.htm

Features of Urban Change Economics -- Those who have the money make the rules. Change rules in favor of those who benefit the economy most. Politics -- Institutions and political figures find making policies that benefit those living in slums to be wasteful. Neoliberalism -- Government relies on free market. Government vs civil responsibility. http://www.forbes.com/2008/02/24/pollution-baku-oil-biz-logistics-cx_tl_0226dirtycities_slide_20.html

"Whose city is it?" Whose land is it? Politics, legalities and institutions -- The system. Whose land is it? Urban citizenship and inequality. Guaranteeing rights to some and denying rights to others. 7 Million people living in slums -- now development opportunity (2009). What is useful to the state? "Residential high rises, shopping malls and television studios," -- economy's backbone. http://wallpapersus.com/mumbai-night-skyscrapers-india-2/

Shocking Discoveries .Sanitation and living conditions. Value of human life is limited. Economic standing more valuable than culture and livelihood. Terrorism of their own people? .Sanitation and living conditions. Something as ordinary as rainfall destroys homes. Homes are packed together and partially built from trash. Water and homes are unsanitary while hunger and disease are common. Most shocking: How closed minded I was. http://www.myseveralworlds.com/2009/04/05/slums-around-the-world/

More Important Details On top of political and economic struggle with housing reform, war and terrorism play a big part of the current state of Mumbai. Political figures resigned due to terrorist attacks. Terrorism directed from the Middle East, mainly pakistan, started decades before September 11, 2001. Perspective from a personal standpoint on what it really means to struggle. http://roundtriparoundtheglob.blogspot.com/2013/02/mumbai-domestic-airport.html
