Why Publish in N&TR? Nicotine & Tobacco Research is one of the world's few peer-reviewed journals devoted exclusively to the study of nicotine and tobacco. It aims to provide a forum for empirical findings, critical reviews, and conceptual papers on the many aspects of nicotine and tobacco, including research from the biobehavioral, neurobiological, molecular biologic, epidemiological, prevention, and treatment arenas. Aim to review manuscripts within 30 days Aim to post accepted manuscripts in 1 week and corrected proofs in 6 weeks Impact Factor 3.296 Editor’s Choice (free): http://ntr.oxfordjournals.org/content/by/tag/choice

The Submission Process Instructions for authors An editor once asked me ‘if I knew the best place to keep a secret?’ He answered his own question - ‘in the instructions to authors’. Before submitting your article to Nicotine & Tobacco Research it is important to read and follow the instructions to authors.

The Submission Process Preparing a manuscript Manuscript structure Formatting references Preparing tables Preparing figures

The Submission Process Submitting a manuscript Articles must be submitted via ScholarOne Select the type of article, add the title, abstract and implications section Select a minimum of three keywords from the drop down list Provide the contact information for all authors Add your preferred and non-preferred reviewers Provide a brief cover letter addressed to the Editor of N&TR Add the number of figures, colour figures, tables and words Permissions File upload https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ntr

The Submission Process Unsubmitted manuscripts The co-authors details have not been added to the online submission site A title page has not been included The abstract is not structured correctly The references and/or in-text citations are formatted incorrectly The funding and declaration of interests sections missing The maximum word count has been exceeded. The maximum number of figures/tables has been exceeded

The Submission Process What to do and not to do… DO…check that your manuscript fits the scope of the journal DO…read and follow the instructions to authors DO…format the manuscript correctly DO…prepare a cover letter addressed to the Editor (of N&TR!) DO…contact the editorial office if you are unsure about anything DON’T…assume that your manuscript has been submitted successfully DON’T…be impatient – the review process can take several weeks.

The Editorial Process Deputy Editor assignment Linda Bauld Tobaco Control Policy Ivan Berlin Human Pharmacology and Biomarkers Adriaan Bruijnzeel Preclinical and Basic Science Richard Edwards Epidemiology Karl Fagerstrom Tobacco Dependence Brian Hitsman Human Laboratory Studies Raymond Niaura Behavioural and Clinical Genetics Jennifer Unger Health Disparities Andrea Weinberger Psychiatric Comorbidity E Paul Wileyto Statistical Editor http://www.oxfordjournals.org/our_journals/nictob/editorial_board.html

The Editorial Process Associate Editor assignment Deputy Editor assigns to Associate Editor with relevant expertise Associate Editor responsible for: Identifying reviewers Collating reviews Providing an initial opinion to the Deputy Editor Identifying publicity potential, suitability for editorial, etc. http://www.oxfordjournals.org/our_journals/nictob/editorial_board.html

The Editorial Process Reviewer assignment Typically two to three reviewers will be required to reach a decision It can take time to identify reviewers willing to provide a review Reviewers have the option to sign their reviews Reviews only guide the decision of the AE and DE

The Editorial Process Decision process Reviews are collated and considered by the AE AE provides an initial opinion to the DE DE considers AE opinion and the reviews DE drafts a decision letter and submits this to the EiC EiC reviews decision and issues the final decision

The Editorial Process Appeal process Sometimes we get things wrong Decisions are not solely based on reviews DE can over-ride AE decision EiC can (but rarely) over-rides DE decision Appeals should be submitted in writing to the DE or EiC All appeals will be considered; not all will change our decision Use sparingly!

What Do We Look For? To have a chance of being published, an article should: Address an important question Report a well conducted study (where appropriate) Be of wide interest to the readership of the journal Be well written We can only published about one third of the submissions we receive, and have to decline some good work!
