Spirituality

Purpose Spiritual Development Learning to recognize that you are a part of a larger spiritual reality and to respect the spiritual choices of others. Spirituality is a PERSONAL journey. No two people are exactly the same. Scouting tries to help young people develop and strengthen their personal spirituality. Some methods include: Strengthening their belief and understanding in God Strengthening their connection with nature and the world around them Strengthening their connection with others while teaching them to take the time to understand and respect others’ beliefs and spirituality Encouraging them to ask questions Helping them develop a personal value system

Remember Spirituality is a very important part of the Scouting program – do not dismiss it simply because you are non-religious! Spirituality is NOT the same as religion. For example, atheists can still be very spiritual people As a Scouter, it is NOT acceptable to promote your personal religious beliefs. Our role is to help the youth explore their OWN spirituality – not ours! Scouters are NOT expected to be religious instructors Simply give a variety of experiences that will bring alive their spiritual selves

Examples of Spirituality in action Formal Campfire Outdoor ceremonies Poetry Personal journals Opening & closing prayers Grace Sharing circle Scout’s Own Religion-in-Life program for Youth Spirituality Award Attending a church Others?

Scout’s Own Many Scouters know they are suppose to include it in their program – they’re just not sure how to do it It should not be religious ceremony –it should be a spiritual celebration Can include elements from all religions or none. Encourages the youth to think beyond their own personal belief system Traditionally held on Sunday mornings at camp See March 2006 article in “The Leader” magazine online, or just ask Scouter Google! Check the Scouter Handbook

Guidelines for a Scout’s Own Involve youth in planning and conducting a Scout’s Own Choose material with universal appeal Try and do it outdoors Can be based on the theme of your camp Keep it simple, clear, and short About 15 minutes long – be flexible

Outline of a typical Scout’s Own Opening Prayer / Reflection Song Responsive reading or activity Story or poem Closing
