The Watsons Go to Birmingham—1963 What was life like during this time period? People Places Events Attitudes Trends Why do we need to know the historical context of this book? Knowing about the historical context of a book better helps us understand the book—especially if it’s a historical fiction book. The historical context helps us understand the characters (their beliefs, their conflicts, their interests, their fears, their ways of speaking), the setting, the events in the story (especially the historically accurate ones), and the themes.
