The Optometry School Journey with Kaplan Learn about admissions, the OAT, and how Kaplan can support you in your future plans. Khanh Ton Student Brand Ambassador University of Houston Khanh.ton@kaplan.com Hi everyone, thank you for joining me today. My name is Khanh, i’m a Kaplan Student Brand Ambassador and i’m here to share what Kaplan has to offer and provide insights on your optometry school journey

So, who am I? Kaplan Student Brand Ambassador Khanh Ton Senior; Biology B.S. major Residential Advisor at CV2 Optometry Assistant at Perfect Vision Associates Intern and volunteer at Texas Children’s Hospital and Methodist Hospital I’ve taken the Kaplan course for the Optometry Admission Test  UHCO c/o 2022! I’ve taken the Kaplan course to prep myself for the OAT, I can honestly say it helped tremendously to prepare me for it. I took the OAT on August 5th, last month, submitted my application a week after, got my secondary application from UHCO 2 weeks after that, an invite to interview at UHCO, did my interview, and got accepted. I’m proud to announce that I will be attending UHCO in fall 2018  As a student brand ambassador, I’m here as a  liaison between you guys and Kaplan. My job is to provide you with the resources necessary for your success. Email me if you have any questions or would like this PowerPoint for reference later on. Transition: Now that you know a little bit about me, let’s go on to talk about the optometry school admissions process!

Secondary Applications Optometry School Admissions Timeline Apr May June July Aug Sept Oct Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Prepare for OAT Prepare for OAT Take OAT Take OAT Primary Primary Applications Secondary Secondary Applications Ideal Interviews Interviews For fall cycle, acceptance for rolling programs will be at least 1 month after you apply; for non-rolling programs, the admissions decision will be made between January and May of the following year, depending on the program. Possible Admissions Decisions Rolling Admissions So, a quick show of hand Who’s met with their advisor about the OAT timeline? Who already has their timeline planned out? Ok, well here is the recommended Optometry School admission timeline. Once you submit your secondary and the school screens your application, you will then potentially be invited for an interview. Optometry School is a rolling admission so the earlier you apply, the better Official OAT Scores available 3–4 weeks after test date Primary applications take 4–6 weeks to be verified

OAT Test Breakdown Section Questions Duration Topics Optional Tutorial 15 minutes Survey of the Natural Sciences 100 90 minutes 40 Biology 30 General Chemistry 30 Organic Chemistry Reading Comprehension 50 60 minutes 3 passages with 13–14 questions each Optional Break Physics 40 50 minutes First-year, Noncalculus-based Physics Quantitative Reasoning 45 minutes Algebra, Probability and Statistics, Geometry, Trigonometry Optional Post Test Survey The OAT is broken down into 4 sections

How is the OAT Scored? Average Test Taker: 300 Average Matriculant: 320+ The OAT is ranged from 200-400 with 300 being the average score and 320 being the average matriculate You’d want to aim around 320 or higher to be considered a competitive applicant . So, with hours of testing how are you going to prepare? This is where Kaplan comes a long

Kaplan Student Experience Your Diagnostic Exam Know exactly what you need to study Stay on track with the personalized course syllabus Enjoy a study program tailored to your needs! The first thing you will do when you enroll in a Kaplan course is take the diagnostic test Then once completed, you will be given a basic general idea of the sections you are strong/weak on. After the initial assessments, Kaplan will craft a personalized course syllabus for you to help build up your weaknesses and additional practice materials to improve upon your strength.

Kaplan Student Experience Your personalized study plan. This screenshot is taken from a OAT online course site that is provided with any course option you choose.

Kaplan Student Experience Reviewing Your Results This screenshot is specifically for the DAT but Kaplan uses SMART REPORTS which allows you to get accurate scores and percentiles. Kaplan identifies the question topics you missed and records the amount of seconds you used on each question so that you can easily identify what you need to work on. This is good for when reviewing your test and looking for patterns in questions you got wrong to avoid making the same mistakes again and reviewing questions you got right to solidify your knowledge. You can see here, things are broken down by major subjects, and then continues to break down further and further into subtopics
