What is Matter? Matter is stuff that has mass and takes up space. There are 4 states of matter; solid liquid gas plasma (ionized gas). Matter can be divided into 2 main categories: Pure Substances Mixtures

Pure Substances and Mixtures Homogeneous (solutions) & Heterogeneous mixtures Can be separated physically Elements & Compounds Cannot be separated physically

An Element is defined one type of atom; on the Periodic Table. Atoms are the smallest unit of matter. Elements CANNOT be chemically separated.

Compounds A Compound is a combination of two or more elements combined chemically. CAN be separated chemically CANNOT be separated physically. Examples of compounds include Water, Salt, Glucose (sugar) and Carbon Dioxide.

Elements vs. Compounds consists of two or more different elements/atoms bonded together only one kind of Element/Atom present cannot be broken down into a simpler form of Matter can be broken down into a simpler form of matter (elements)

Mixtures A Mixture consists of 2 or more elements and/or compounds that are not bonded, but are physically mixed together. CAN be physically separated. Two Types of Mixtures; Homogeneous Mixtures, also known as solutions Heterogeneous Mixtures.

Mixtures Mixtures can be separated physically many ways. Examples sorting, phase changes, heat, pressure, filtration, centrifuge, separation flasks or magnets

Homogeneous Mixtures A Homogeneous mixture is a mixture with uniform composition and every part of the solution has the same properties. Homogeneous mixtures are called solutions. A solution has two parts; the Solute and the Solvent. The Solvent does the dissolving in the mixture. The Solute gets dissolved Is Water a Solution? Is Milk a Solution? Examples: A gold ring, Kool-Aid, salt water

Heterogeneous Mixtures A Heterogeneous mixture is a mixture with components seen; two or more phases present. Examples: mixtures of sand and water or sand and iron filings, a conglomerate rock, water and oil, a salad, trail mix and concrete (not cement).
