Turner Syndrome Chanel Riley

A little history. . . . Turner’s Syndrome was discovered by Dr. Henry Turner in 1938 Henry Turner (1892-1970) (Massimini 2000, 145)

What Is Turner Syndrome??? A condition that affects only girls and women that results from a missing or incomplete sex chromosome (mayoclinic.com)

Three perspectives Diagnosis Symptoms Treatment

Diagnosis 1 in every 3000 live female births Girls with Turner Syndrome are usually diagnosed at an early age (usually at birth or at puberty). Determined by a blood test requested by a doctor or pediatrician

Symptoms Webbed neck – extra folds of the skin on the sides of the neck Low hairline at the back of the neck Delayed Growth – average height 4”7 (most common) (Rank & Sanger 2001) Edema - extra fluid in the hands and feet Drooping of the eyelids Thyroid problems Unusually large number of moles on the skin Abnormally shaped and lower set ears Abnormal bone development (especially the bones of the hands and elbows)

Treatment Growth Hormone Administered using an injection pen Usually administered at an early age (around age 7) Helps girls with TS to reach a more normal height Promotes bone growth It usually takes about 3-6 months to notice any change in height after the administration of growth hormone Made in a laboratory and is identical to the same type of hormone produced by the pituitary gland

Treatment Estrogen Often started at around age 12 or 13 Helps start the onset of puberty kidshealth.org
