Ancient Greece Greece civilization began in 2000 BC (BCE) Civilization developed on rocky peninsula Built cities in small valleys long Greece’s coast Used the seas to travel & trade Mountains limited travel & communication by land How do you think this impacted the lives of the people?

Athens Athens- largest, most powerful city-state Located near seaport, trade helped city-state grow in wealth & power Slowly, through many rulers (elected by citizens) Athens became a democracy (the first) ↑ Acropolis of Athens is dedicated to the Goddess Athena. Located in the middle of Athens, many myths, festivals and important events are connected to the sacred Acropolis.

Ancient Greek Life Men dominated public & private life Military Theater (perform both genders in plays) Politics & government Master of house Access to education Access to jobs & prestige Women Domestic work Raised & taught how to cook, weave, and clean
