Curriculum Newsletter Summer Term 2017 We have a busy Summer Term ahead! Here are some of the exciting curricular activities we have planned: a visit to the River Rea on Tuesday 2nd May, a Science Fun Day on Friday 26th May, a Health Relationship Education week, a NSPCC workshop, an Enabling Enterprise Challenge Day, a visit to Turves Green School on 13th June for a variety of workshops led by teachers and pupils of the school, a ‘Parents’ Inspire Workshop’ on the morning of Thursday 15th June, learning to play the ocarina or the recorder and finally we will also be choosing a few children for ‘Peer Tutor’ training. Don’t forget we will be celebrating our school’s ’60th Year Anniversary’ on the last day of the Summer Term...further details to follow! Swimming- Swimming for Year 5 has now finished and children will have an extra P.E. session on Friday afternoons. P.E. Both classes will have their weekly P.E. lessons on Thursday and Friday afternoons. Please make sure that your child has their named P.E. kit in school, (including pumps, shorts and a t-shirt). They can also bring in a tracksuit or jogging bottoms with a long sleeved top and trainers as we will aim to have P.E. outdoors as often as we can. Homework Maths homework will be explained and given out on Thursday and should be returned by the following Wednesday. Maths homework will relate to learning objectives for that week. English and Creative Curriculum homework will be linked to our topic on ‘Birmingham’ in HT5. An English homework project will be set for HT6. The library will also be open after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays to allow children the opportunity to use the internet or carry out research skills using library books. The children have 12 spellings to learn and will be tested once a fortnight. The children are expected to learn multiplication and division facts up to 12 x 12 as part of their homework. Curriculum Newsletter Reading Books The children must bring their reading book and book bag to school every day. Please try to hear your child read at least 3 times a week and sign and comment in their Home Learning Diaries. This will enable you to support your child in their studies and help them to achieve their very best. Children will be tested each week as part of the Accelerated Reader programme. If the children do not pass their Accelerated Reader test, they will keep and re read their book to help them with comprehension skills. When the children have passed each test and earned points, they will receive a reading certificate. Children also get an opportunity each week to use the Library in school every Tuesday to take out a Library book of their own choice. If there are any questions please come and speak to us after school. Miss Clay Mrs Topping Miss Partridge
