Topic: PRE-HISTORY & EARLY MAN Essential Question: What were people like during the Paleolithic Era (Old Stone Age)? Do Now: What is meant by pre-history?

In the beginning, there was darkness…..

I. What is Pre-History? pre = means “before” history = the record of past events and times

II. Migration of early man Early man migrated from Africa to North America by walking over the - Bering Land Bridge Bering land bridge

III. Paleolithic Era (Old Stone Age) Time = traced back to 2 million BC Where = Africa How do we know? = found a Stone Age skeleton (Lucy)

LUCY In 1974, a skeleton was found in Africa. The bones were those of a female, about 20 years old or so when she died. Scientists named her Lucy. About 3 million years ago, when Lucy was alive, she was about 4 feet tall and weighed about 50 pounds. Scientists suspect that she fell into a lake or river and drowned.

This time period was known as the Paleolithic Age IV. What we learned from Lucy Characteristics Nomadic (wandering) Small groups (20-30) Few things (travelled light) Everyone did the same thing This time period was known as the Paleolithic Age or the Old Stone Age.
