Sponsorship The provision of financial or material assistance by a private enterprise. In return it receives publicity through its association with the sport/club/individual.

Main Points Types – who receives Forms of sponsorship Disadvantages & Advantages for sponsor Disadvantages & Advantages to sport etc Unacceptable sponsorship

Types of Sponsorship

Types/Recipients + Involvement Individual – sports people negotiate to get individual sponsorship deals. E.g. F1 drivers overalls are covered in logos and some sports have had to bring in rules about the number and size of these logos. Why do they do it? They are endorsing the product (giving their approval). Teams & Clubs from school teams to major clubs are able to negotiate lucrative financial deals + kit for free.

Sports – The National Governing Bodies (NGB) will have sponsors for their various competitions e.g’s? Allows them to promote their sport and pay coaches and develop at grass roots level. However lesser sports find it difficult to attract and so their sport suffers. Events – Increasingly popular as they can name the sport after them for extra publicity. Also with Olympic games they can then put their logo on product to help increase sales.

Forms of sponsorship (Advantages to the individual) Money for living expenses. Kit and equipment Clothing Travel Food (sport specific diets) And training facilities, trainers. Entry Fees & Expenses. Accessories

Benefits for Sponsors Hope to increase their revenue, through advertising, sales and use of their product. Logos/Brand name becomes well known and recognised. Success, health, popularity is associated with the sponsor. Media coverage to advertise their product. Good will even tax relief.

Disadvantages to Sponsor Success in sport is not guaranteed. Media coverage may be reduced. Wrong image if player behaves badly.

Advantages to Sport/ Individual/ Sport Sports people can give up their job and focus on their sport, train more, rest. The sport can be promoted and attract greater numbers. (Profile increased) Can run more competitions and bigger ones. Provision of coaching, equipment, travel etc.

Disadvantages to Sport/Individual/Event Sponsors take over and start to dictate rule changes, clothing and timings. Minority sports find it difficult to attract sponsors. If image of sport is damaged then sponsor might withdraw money/support.

Unacceptable Sponsorship Anything associated with products that have a negative effect on our health. Examples: tobacco, alcohol, junk food Some are illegal others are not at present.
