OPERATION: DISHWASHER LIVEGREEN OPERATION: DISHWASHER

MISSION STATEMENT “Live Green is devoted to promoting and developing healthy relationships with the environment, nature, and those who inhabit it. Members are committed to participating in eco-friendly acts and raising money for such organizations. In short, our goal is to make the earth a cleaner, safer place to live; beginning with Edenton.”

What LiveGreen has done… Posters to educate peers Acquired a recycling dumpster Transferred large recycling bins to the hallways …and it’s only been four months!

Environmental Problems at JAHHS The use of cardboard milk cartons daily (cannot be recycled!) The use of Styrofoam trays in our cafeteria (cannot be recycled!) Excessive waste of paper towels and water by the students

-----The School System cannot afford such an increase----- LiveGreen has explored a few options to enhance the environmental conditions at JAHHS… A.) Recyclable trays: $60.00 a day $8,100 more per year B.) Plastic milk bottles to replace non-recyclable cartons: $2,000-$4,000 more per year -----The School System cannot afford such an increase-----

Plan C: A replacement that will go a long way: DISHWASHER The dishwasher in the John A. Holmes cafeteria has been broken and out-of-use for years now. If the dishwasher is replaced, we can use plastic trays that we already have instead of the Styrofoam trays

Did YOU Know… That the cost of Styrofoam trays per day at JAHHS is $15.00? Per week: About $75.00 Per month: About $225.00 Per year: About $2,700.00 This is money that could be saved!

A simple, Styrofoam tray. Harmless, right? WRONG.

Not so verdant anymore.

The current dishwasher in its location in the kitchen. Why do we dump nearly EIGHT HUNDRED Styrofoam trays into our landfills daily? The current dishwasher in the cafeteria is broken! Nobody will pay to get a new one. The current dishwasher in its location in the kitchen.

-A similar model of dishwasher that currently stands in our cafeteria -A similar model of dishwasher that currently stands in our cafeteria. The price will range from $10,000 to $15,000. -By investing in a new dishwasher, we would be eliminating the $2,700 spent a year on Styrofoam trays AND be conserving the environment. -In 5 years, the dishwasher will pay for itself.

LiveGreen’s Funding Now working with the Chowan Edenton Environmental Group (CEEG) Talent Show in February (proceeds will go towards the dishwasher) Newspaper articles to get our voices heard and receive possible grants Raffles to win energy-saving light bulbs and other such eco-friendly supplies PTA at the High School
