Quick Quiz 1 - 3 List three things that all good summaries need to do. You may use your in-class notes (including notes you might have taken on the Summary Worksheet Handout) from Mon., Nov. 14th. 1 - 3 List three things that all good summaries need to do. 4 - 5 List two things that good summaries never do.

All Good Summaries Always… Contain all of the author’s main ideas Has to be based on the author’s ideas Has a simple title– A Short Summary of…. The first sentence states the name of the article, the name of the author (s), the author’s main idea. The last sentence should state how the author ended the article. The summary faithfully represents the author’s ideas. Are principally composed of paraphrasing the author’s ideas (this means to use your words to express another person’s ideas): this allows you to imagine these ideas—and soon, they become part of you, to be used by you, to be transformed by you, to help you construct a more complex view of the world.

All Good Summaries NEVER … Never refer to the author using a first name only. They never “rant” (i.e., express the opinion of the summarizer) Never add ideas that were not in the original. Use pronouns that are unclear, i.e., anyone who is reading the summary cannot readily figure out to whom a pronoun refers. (pronoun-antecedent issues). Use direct quotations without quotation marks or without identifying who said what.

Reminders Your author reading project will be due on Monday, Nov. 21st, so you should schedule a time when you can go to hear a writer read from his or her book, and do it soon. Please see the handout on the portal for more details.

Homework Due Mon, Nov. 21st Summary outline/blueprint and first draft (must be typed and double-spaced) for “It’s Time for a New Kind of High School.” Complete the phrases/clauses exercise on the handout. If you are uncertain about the correct answer, just do your best! Write a sentence or two about why you are confused. Get caught up on your reading in Grit. We are going to use material from Grit for your last essay! You should have read through Ch 10 by Monday, Nov. 21st. Your author reading project will be due on Monday, Nov. 21st. Complete the exercise on the handout on Phrases & Clauses (posted on the portal).
