Good and bad essay format Not grammar errors.

How are essays special? Essays are one genre of writing. They are different from texts, facebook posts, blog posts, or newspaper articles. They make a clear argument and support it. They look like an essay, just like this person looks like a doctor. istockphoto Writing Formal Writing Essays

Essays have structure The reader expects particular things in particular places Especially: A thesis (the main idea of your essay) Topic sentences (the main idea of each paragraph) Paragraphs that are on one topic each

This is on a different topic. Makino 1 Mark Makino Professor Daniel Rivas ESL 361 Essay 2 23 May 2017 This Is My Title Blah blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah blah blah blah. Your thesis Your thesis should tell your reader the reason that you are writing this essay. It usually comes at the end of your first paragraph. It sets up the body paragraphs. It is a sentence, not a list. I think that watermelons are tasty, but many other people like ice cream. Watermelons are a great summer food because they are cold, they are sweet, and they are healthy.

Your Topic sentences The topic sentence introduces the supporting topic The topic sentence ties to the thesis Last summer I bought a yellow watermelon. Watermelons are very cold. Watermelons are cold, which is perfect for a hot summer day.

Your body paragraphs Body paragraphs support the idea in the topic sentence and the thesis. Body paragraphs are on one topic. Watermelons are cold, which is perfect for a hot summer day. In the summer, the weather is hot and dry. California is especially hot. My home country is hot, but California is dry, too. I miss the soft drinks of my home country. Watermelons are cold, which is perfect for a hot summer day. In the summer, the weather is hot and dry. Unlike many other fruits, watermelons stay cold for a long time, so they are good for picnics and barbecues. Their thick rind keeps the inside cold and refreshing.
