Introduction Intro. – General to specific–ends w/thesis Literary essay – Give background info. for your reader to understand the context of your essay as you lead the reader to your thesis. Include the author and the title (underlined).

Body Paragraphs Each body paragraph begins with a topic sentence–part of the thesis (must support) Evidence – quoted, paraphrased, and summarized details (support from novel) Commentary –explanation and analysis of evidence and how it supports your topic

Body Paragraphs Your arguments for each body paragraph should usually be in chronological order as you discuss the novel and build support for your thesis. Use transitions throughout the paper as you take your reader from point to point. Use specific evidence from the novel for support and to show your knowledge of the novel. All information must support your thesis.

Body Paragraphs Your commentary in each body paragraph should be part of your discussion of the evidence. As you present your evidence, explain how it supports the points you are making (which in turn support your thesis). Explain your points as if you’re explaining to someone who has not read the novel; you will be more thorough.

Conclusion Conclusion–restate/reword your thesis, sum up points, and STOP! - specific to general No preaching, teaching, or recommending the book!
