Deforestation in Ecuador By: Poonam , Nikhil, and Jack, Gaurav

What is Deforestation? Definition of DEFORESTATION: The action or process of clearing forests or the state of having been cleared of forests

What is happening in Ecuador Home to part of the Amazon Was originally largely forested Today, large amounts of the forest has been destroyed, caused by many factors (cattle ranching, etc.)

Root Causes Cattle Ranching Small scale agriculture Logging(legal and illegal) Fires, dams, mining, ect. Large scale agriculture Cattle Ranching Small scale agriculture These are the main causes of deforestation in Ecuador

Effects of Deforestation Deforestation lowers biodiversity due to the habitats of many animals being destroyed. If trees are being destroyed then this will lower the stability between oxygen and carbon dioxide. By having small scale and large scale agriculture, the soil becomes virtually useless.

Evidence and Reasons Plants and animals to die due to deforestation Lessens biodiversity Around 61,764 hectares(about 151 acres) destroyed every year. The native people who live in the Amazon will have their homes destroyed. The medicine from the Amazon rainforest will be very limited.

What Deforestation has caused in Ecuador Because of deforestation there was a lot of flooding and contributed to the “El Nino” which is the change in weather. Rainforest are having their homes destroyed because of deforestation.

Benefits of having of a Rainforest The Amazon Rainforest is responsible for 20 percent of the world’s oxygen. A quarter of all medicines comes from forests and plants. Rainforests stabilize the earth’s atmosphere by taking in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. Rainforests contribute to the water cycle by moisturizing the air so condensation increases and rainfall increases.

Connections In connection to the MGD6, rainforests can provide medicine. Green house gases will go down due to the large number of trees. For Target 7.B, saving the rainforest will reduce biodiversity loss.

Solutions Fence of more area for national parks. Legally limit cattle ranching. Reforestation to replant trees in the forests of Ecuador. The government can broadcast advertisements for preserving land.

REDD plus The UN-REDD collaborates on reducing emissions from deforestation in developing countries. They promote meaningful involvement in indigenous people and forest dependant countries. To learn more about REDD Plus go on: http://www.un-redd.org/AboutUN-REDDProgramme/tabid/102613/Default.aspx
