Ch. 5 Anatomy, Term, Basic Weight Training Exercises

Anatomy Directional Terms Anterior In front or in the front part Posterior Behind, in back, or in the rear Medial Relating to the middle or center Lateral On or the side; farther from the median

Anatomy Directional Terms Cont. Abduction Lateral movement away from the midline Adduction Lateral movement toward the midline

Anatomy Terms Cont. Extension Straightening movement that results in an increased joint angle by moving the bones apart. Flexion Bending movement that results in a decrease of the angle in a joint by bringing the bones together

Anatomy Term Cont. Pronation Internal rotation or inward movement Supination External rotation or outward movement

Anatomy Terms Cont. Prime Mover or Agonist A muscle or group of muscles responsible for the action or movement Antagonist Muscle or group of muscles that relax to permit movement by the agonist, and contracts acting like a brake at the completion of a movement.

Anatomy Terms Cont. Eccentric Muscle action in which active muscle fibers lengthen Concentric Muscle action in which active muscle fibers shorten Isometric Muscle activity in which there is tension in the muscle but it does not shorten or lengthen.
