Informational speech on offshore oil rigs By Malik M.Atif ID#200901778

Introduction What are off shore oil rigs? Why was there a need to drill for oil offshore? Brief History of offshore oil rigs. How is oil found under the water ? How is it extracted ?

What are offshore oil rigs? Goldwyn gas field near North Rankin Australia

Why was there a need to drill for oil offshore? High demand for oil Higher prices of oil Three-fourth of the earth is covered with water

Brief History of offshore oil rigs The first offshore oil rig was installed in 1897 near California. The first deep sea oil rig was built in the Gulf of Mexico in 1947. The Safaniyah oil field, which was first brought on-stream in 1957, remains the world’s largest offshore reservoir with an estimated 25-35 Bbbl of crude oil.

Saudi Armco offshore oil rig projects

How is oil found under the water Satellite images. Compressed-air gun - shoots pulses of air into the water (for exploration over water) Explosives - are thrown overboard (for exploration over water), and detonated. Magnetic survey Seismic surveying

How is oil extracted from the sea bed? Exploratory drilling. Main hole drilling. Drilling mud. Production casing

Perforating the casting. Connecting a multi-valved structure called a Christmas tree. Removal of the drill. Placing of a pump on the well head. Pump on an oil well Diamond core drill bits

Conclusion Better understanding of offshore rigs Their history Their working Why they were needed
