MATHEMATICS INFORMATION EVENING WEDNESDAY 10TH OCTOBER 2012 – 7.15 PM Please take a ticket from the tables at the rear of the hall. Thank you

Welcome Welcome to our Mathematics Information Evening, the programme of the evening is as follows: There are 3 sessions available for you to attend each of which tracks the progression in Knowledge, Skills and Understanding of different areas of the National Curriculum for Mathematics from the Early Years Foundation Stage to Year 6; Each session will be led by staff from across the age ranges in school and as with our English Information Evening earlier this year we will not be talking at you and you will not be inactive – mentally or physically.

Sessions Session 1 – In the Main Hall. “Using and Applying Mathematics and Problem Solving”. This session will explore how children and adults use the maths that they have learnt to investigate and make sense of every day life; Session 2 – “Number” - In Mrs. Mangan’s Room, which is upstairs and turn sharp left. This session will explain how we teach children the progressive skills of number and calculation from Reception to Year 6; Session 3 – In the Small Hall. “Shape, Space, Measure and Data Handling”. This session explores the more creative and visual aspects of mathematics together with those skills of data collection, sorting, representing, recording and interpreting.

Where to next ….. If you have a blue raffle ticket please remain in the Main Hall for session 1 and then attend sessions in order, at the end of your 3rd session please return to the Main Hall; If you have an pink ticket please start at session 2 then move to session 3 and finally session 1; If you have a white ticket please start at session 3 in the Small Hall then move to session 1, then session 2 at the end of session 2 please return to the Main Hall; If your number is a Prime Number you can choose!

Vocabulary Quiz One of the most important aspects of understanding and being successful in mathematics is being able to understand specific mathematical vocabulary. As teachers we use technical vocabulary from the very early stages. Can you explain what is meant by the following in mathematics: sum, difference, product, quotient, integer, digit, term, bisect, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th quadrant, translation, tessellate, obtuse, acute, mean, median, mode, net. Have you got a Maths Dictionary at home? If your answer is “No” may we suggest you add it the Christmas List.

GOODNIGHT – HAVE A SAFE JOURNEY HOME Any Questions Questions. Copies of all the presentations will be up loaded to the web site together with the government documents “Understanding Progress in Mathematics – A Parents Guide” and “Mathematical Vocabulary”. Any other requests? Thank you for attending and a big thank you to all our staff for giving up their time this evening. GOODNIGHT – HAVE A SAFE JOURNEY HOME
