Gender Rules for Spanish Nouns Edited by: Señora Pearson 2017

Example: el vestido = the dress = which is masculine Gender Rules Gender means masculine and feminine. Gender does not always have to do with the person. ALL Spanish nouns have assigned gender Some of the gender assignments do NOT make sense! Example: el vestido = the dress = which is masculine

Gender Rules When do you use the masculine gender for agreement? There are 3 rules for using masculine gender.

Masculine Gender Rules 1. Choose masculine gender to agree when all items are masculine.

Examples: Chico (boy) Hombres (men) Profesor (male teacher) Señor (Mr.)

Masculine Gender Rules 2. Choose masculine gender to agree when there are mixed (both) genders involved.

When there are masculine AND feminine together, no matter how many of each, it will ALWAYS be masculine.

If you want to talk about a group of young people and the group is mixed (male & female), you MUST use the masculine form of the word.

Example: There are 100 chicas (girls) and 5 chicos (boys) in your group, you MUST use the word “chicos”.

3. Choose masculine gender to agree when items are unknown in gender. Masculine Gender Rules 3. Choose masculine gender to agree when items are unknown in gender. (Some words you will just need to memorize!)

Feminine Gender Rules 1. Choose feminine gender to agree when all items are feminine. It must be known feminine.

Examples: Chica (girl) Mujeres (women) Profesora (female teacher) Señora (Mrs.)
