Technology Vocabulary Part 3 Technology literate, technology, system, models, modeling, resource, requirement, trade-off, optimization

Technology Literate Understand Technology Identify a technology you understand Technology is created to meet human needs If you are technology literate you understand how processes work and how products work , and understand that the laws of nature limit what technology can do.

Technology Makes use of human knowledge to convert resources into goods and services that people want and need.

Systems Key ideas set fields of study apart Geometry is different than Algebra Key ideas for technology involve systems Systems are interrelated parts that work together to produce a desired result. Example: Schools (teachers, students, text books) Tractor (engine, wheels, and plow) Describe a system, what are the parts?

Models Represent a system, process, product, structure or environment Can be graphic (drawing) Physical (scale model) Ex: toy car Virtual (computer game) Mathematical (graph, chart)

Identify a model in the real world Models etc… Represent, analyze, predict, and explain the performance of a device or system Often built before final product is produced Model of building for architect Identify a model in the real world

Resources Any type of supply, service, or support Seven types: People Capital (money) Time Information Energy Tools machines

IF…. If you created a new technology that used the sun to make and receive texts what would your resources be for the project?

Requirements Define the performance of a system New car design How quickly should it accelerate? How fuel efficient must it be? How should information be displayed to the driver? How much room is required for the driver?

Trade-Offs Technologists who develop products often cannot include everything they want in their design due to costs of materials They have give up one option in order to gain a more realistic option A tire that offers better traction might be better performing for a car design but the manufacture has to make a trade-off when choosing the brand, costs, and warranty option for the tire when considering the total costs for the customer.

Optimization The process of choosing alternatives to make a solution work. When designing a car the manufacture will test the for safety, if the data results in possible injury to a human they may change the restraint system to make the car safer. They will optimize safety by making alternatives to the seat belt system. Identify another way a designer might optimize technology.
