We will work on improving grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing skills. All mandated TEKS for reading and English will be included in our studies. Reading – In Class and Independent Beginning the 3rd week of school, we will begin reading The Outsiders in class, along with selected poems, letters, lyrics and articles. (Feel free to buy your child their own copy if they’d like to be able to annotate.) Students are required to read 10 books outside class throughout the year covering the genres of fiction (sci-fi/fantasy, historical, realistic), non-fiction, biography and poetry. Have a question? E-mail me! mparker@huffmanisd.net

Warm Up/Literature Notebook On Level ELA 8 Mrs. Parker 832-802-4149 Homework policy: Homework is due when class begins. Late homework will follow the district’s late work policy. A reading assignment is important homework. Pop quizzes are given over the reading. If you make a 0 on a reading quiz, it will be considered a homework offense. If you receive four 0s for homework during a grading period, a parent contact will follow. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to ask for the work you missed. Bring to every class: Clean paper Blue/black pen or pencil Independent reading book Spiral notebook Quizzes Pop quizzes are given over reading assignments and occasionally, grammar lessons. Announced quizzes will be given over literature notes and grammar units. Hall Passes Each student may use a maximum of 3 restroom passes during a grading period. Leaving the classroom is for emergencies only. New this year! We will be using Google Classroom for class assignments, a way to submit your papers, and more. Tardies Being late to class is not acceptable. We will follow the school tardy policy. Warm Up/Literature Notebook Your spiral notebook will be used to keep all of your warm ups, literature notes and vocabulary in one place. (a.k.a. helpful study tool!). This notebook will checked periodically for a grade. Be sure to keep it up-to-date. How can I earn an A on a paper, project or assignment? Carefully read and follow all directions exactly. 2. Put in some thought and planning- don’t just fill a word count. 3. Do all preliminary work assigned and turn it in on time. 4. Avoid writing errors by careful proofreading. Adhere to all writing non-negotiables 5. Be sure your thoughts are logically organized in a definite order. Have a question? E-mail me! mparker@huffmanisd.net
