Variables and Linear Equations Math 75 The first week
What is the Variable and what is the Constant Y= x +3 Total dollars= wage*hours + $3
Make a name tent
ALEKS software First go to ALEKS.com Next create an account Type in the course code: K6XL9 - WEXVE (that enrolls you) Type in the corresponding Financial Aid code: BD958 - 4DBD0 – DC40B – DC40B – 3DA83 This allows you to work for two weeks before needing to buy the Code. The code can either be bought at the book store which I recommend or you can do it online. There are two types the one for 11 weeks or there is a 52 week. After logging in start with the knowledge skills test. (Take it seriously)
Some useful things before we start Phillip Jones Office: WOH-129 Office Hours: R 8:00 – 8:50, W 12:00 pm – 12:50 pm Email: jonesp@linnbenton.edu Class time: 12:00 pm – 12:50 am MTRF in WOH – 227
How to succeed in this course: 1) Be on time and ready to work 2) Be respectful to one another 3) Bring the appropriate material to class 4) Have a positive attitude 5) Form study groups
Self introductions First make up a name tent First name on front and back. Draw some picture that represents some part of you. Tell me about yourself What’s your major? What did you do this summer?
Go to website for the syllabus
Plan for the day Introductions and getting started ALEKS software Ground rules Introductions continued Syllabus What to expect from the class Desmos software Trip down to the Learning Resource Center
What to expect. The class is a very hands on and group based. Make sure to keep up on your ALEKS homework. Bring a Laptop or a tablet to class every day. (if you can’t afford one check it out at the library) Attendance is required for the activities End of the first day
Famous Equations Activity 1.1 Get into groups of 3 to 4 I will begin by assigning each of you a particular equation You’ll research the topic at hand and record your findings After all of this you will have someone present what your findings are. Day 2
Last Tuesdays Equation Activity Helpful Annoying/Not Helpful Access to computer Dividing the work load Group Intros Talking things Self work Bigger groups Distraction
Important Dates Every week ALEKS Home work is due. Week 3 ALEKS Test 1 October 13, 2017 Friday Week 5 Paper Test 2 October 27, 2017 Friday Week 8 Paper Test 3 November 17, 2017 Friday Week 10 ALEK Test 4 December 2, 2017 Saturday Final Project Week 10
Plan for day 3 ALEKS questions Finish 1.1 Working Together Start and finish 1.2 Introduction to variables
Working Together 1.1 Continued First I need everyone to turn in their activities from Tuesday if you have not done so already. Next were going to go over 1.1 in class for 10 min. 5 minutes of self-reflection and 5 minutes of the whole class sharing.
1.2 Introduction to Variables Go to student.desmos.com Go ahead and log in. Type in the code: RYFJW Start the program: Expressing Mathematical Relationships If done early help classmates out. Were going to spend about 20 minutes total on this. 10 minutes on the relationships and 10 how you know you wrote it correctly.
1.3 Introduction to variables - Central Park Take 5 to 10 minutes to go over what a variable and constant are. Class discussion.
1.3 Identifying Variables and Equations What is a constant? A constant is something that is fixed. Examples of these would be: 3, 17, pi, -5.2, etc… What is a variable? A non-consistent thing. Something that will change. Examples of variables would be: x, t, y, v, etc… where each one of these letters represents something like number of pies, or total time, or distance traveled, or velocity.
Identifying Variables in Equations What are the variables and constants in the given Equations: Y = x + 2 ; Well, the variables for this equation are y and x. The constant to the equation is 2. What about T=3x; In this equation the T and the x are both variables and the 3 is our constant. Now lets get started in the Desmos Activity Called Central Park. Log on to student.desmos.com Course code: End of week 1
Welcome to week 2 Any quick questions about ALEKS so far. Plan of the day get going on Activity 1.4.
