What can good display do? make reading choices quick, easy and tempting help readers find something new for themselves be a showcase for the whole library service highlight a range of fiction and non-fiction offer new visitors places to start exploring

What works? Physical factors strongly affect the way that display performs. Making small alterations can dramatically increase their impact. Here are key factors to consider as you observe the use of displays in your own library.

a prime location

visible from the street

located not too far from the entrance

spots that offer tempting choices for browsers

uncluttered space

clear sightlines

a way in to a part of the collection

angles that face the direction of travel

face-forward at eye-level position

a focus on books - props get in the way

the right number of books: too many is overwhelming, too few offers poor choice

targeted spot locations

strong visual impact and colour contrast

good maintenance – full displays attract more attention
