Environmental problems

(Native American poem) Read the poem and try to understand it. Only when all the rivers have run dry and all the fish in the sea have died only when all the rainforests have been burnt down and there is no food for the animals only when all the blue skies have been filled with smoke and the cities of the world have choked will the white man understand that it’s too late to save the earth. (Native American poem)

Read the words and pronounce them correctly Water pollution – загрязнение воды Air pollution - загрязнение воздуха Acid rain - кислотный дождь Destruction of the rainforests - уничтожение тропических лесов Extinction – вымирание Dangerous fumes – опасные испарения Waste – отходы Threat – угроза To contaminate – загрязнять Famine(starvation) – голод Carbon dioxide – двуокись углерода Species – вид, род, порода Ban – запрещение Endanger – подвергать опасности Damage – урон, ущерб

Watch the film and answer the questions

What is ecology? Ecology is a science which studies relationship between all forms of life on our planet with its environment. This word came from the Greek “oikos” which means “home”. This idea of home includes the whole planet of ours; it’s population, the Nature, animals, birds, fish, insects, all other living beings and even the atmosphere around our planet.

For example: I think picture 1 shows… Say what problem each picture ilustrates. Match the problem and the picture. For example: I think picture 1 shows…

I think picture 1 shows…

The Aral Sea disappears into a Toxic Dust Cloud Once the world’s fourth-largest lake, approximately the size of Ireland, the Aral Sea is now a salty desert wasteland. The disappearance of the Aral Sea is considered “one of the planet’s worst environmental disasters”. The sea began shrinking in the 1960s when the Soviets diverted water to boost cotton production. Lost along with the wildlife-teeming waters was the lucrative fishing industry. The Aral Sea’s ecosystem has been almost completely destroyed. The Aral’s soil is also highly contaminated with toxic chemicals from weapon testing, pesticides, fertilizer run-off and industrial projects. The toxic salty sand left behind causes health problems as it is inhaled when it rises in the air with the winds. People in the area have high rates of cancer, lung diseases, tuberculosis, digestive, liver problems, kidney diseases and eye disorders. The area also has a high child mortality rate.

Answer the questions. What was the size of the Aral sea? When did the sea begin shrinking? What causes health problems? What diseases have high rates in the area?

Use the phrases in the box and the fact file to discuss, as in the example. Make your own dialogue A: I heard the other day that polar bears may be extinct in 100 years. B: That’s really shocking! A: Well, maybe all is not lost. Introducing a topic Expressing concern I heard the other day that… They say that… Did you know that …? I read somewhere recently that… That’s (just/totally) horrible/ridiculous/irresponsible etc. That’s (really/so) terrible/cruel/shocking!etc. It/That doesn’t bear thinking about! Expressing hope Well, maybe we can do something before it’s too late. Maybe all is not lost. There’s still hope.

Earth Alert! Fact File Polar bears may be extinct in 100 years. Sea levels could rise by 50 cm in the next 100 years. UK winters could become 30% wetter by 2100. The top ten warmest years since 1860 have all occurred since 1980. More than 150 acres of rainforest are lost every minute.

Make your own sentences Make your own sentences. Link the following sentences with: as a result, therefore, consequently or as a consequence Trees are being cut down. Many species will become extinct. People in cities breathe exhaust fumes every day. Many of them develop breathing problems. Industrial waste is dumped into the sea. Fish die. People drop litter in the streets. People get diseases. Most factories do not use filters. The air gets dirty.

Now join the sentences using to or so that. We should stop cutting down trees. Animals won’t lose their natural habitats. We should build wildlife parks. We can protect animals from extinction. We should plant more trees. We will have more oxygen. We should clean up the litter in cities. We won’t catch diseases from it. We should find clean forms of energy. We can save the planet.

Homework LEVEL A: Write an essay about ecological problems in Neftekamsk, suggest ways to improve that situation LEVEL B: Give your ideas about the environment protection. What can you do to help the nature. Start with “I can …”. LEVEL C: Learn the new words

Thank you for your work. Good bye!
