National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office Mobile - Pensacola Special Update Briefing for Winter Storm Self introduction and introduction of topic. 5 PM CST Monday 27 January 2014

This outlook is intended for interests across interior southeast Mississippi, south Alabama, the western Florida Panhandle, and the adjacent Gulf coastal waters of Alabama and northwest Florida

Current Weather Pattern Cold front moving south rapidly across Mississippi and Alabama. First batch of rain ending next few hours across South Alabama and NWFL today. Temps will remain above freezing through this evening…then inch below freezing early Tuesday morning and after midnight tonight. Arctic Airmass

Key Winter Storm Impacts While 1 to 3 inches of snow is possible with this event north of I-10, the more significant impact is that 0.1 to 0.3 inches of ice accrual from freezing rain is forecasted. This type of ice accumulation on trees, power lines, roads and bridges could result in prolonged power outages and dangerous travel conditions all day Tuesday into Wednesday morning.

Timing of Winter Storm Impacts Expect light patchy rains to spread in from the southwest late tonight…with isolated patches of freezing rain and sleet expected toward daybreak. May have a few isolated slick spots north of I-10 by 7 AM. Precipitation will become more widespread after daybreak Tuesday and become heavier through the afternoon. Expect periods of freezing rain and sleet in the morning north of I-10 to transition to snow in the afternoon and evening. Temps will remain below freezing across most inland counties on Tuesday…adding to the potential for ice, sleet and snow accumulations. South of I-10…we may hover just above freezing a good part of the morning…but temps will drop in the afternoon with periods of freezing rain and sleet expected many areas in the afternoon. Forecaster Confidence: 80 percent chance of winter storm impacts expected now.

Small Craft Advisories are posted. Waves building to near 10 feet well offshore by late tonight. Strong north winds continue until Thursday morning then diminish. Given very cold temps in the 20s Tuesday night …some freezing spray is possible on vessels transiting marine area.
