Sagamore Council Pack – Parent Orientation WELCOME! Sagamore Council Pack – Parent Orientation This meeting can be as a parent breakout at the first pack meeting or a separate meeting. Pre-event tasks: Review all the youth applications you received at the joining event and determine which boys will form which dens, how many new den leaders do you need (remember two-deep leadership)? How many boys will join existing dens? Has your pack conducted a Pack Leadership and Membership Inventory? If so, you should know exactly what you need for adult leaders well before you start your parent orientation meeting. You need to make sure all parents understand at the parents orientation meeting that the pack needs their support as ‘parent helpers’ or registered leaders. Take time to create a wall chart of the different activities that need parent help so they sign-up to help the pack for one of these events at this meeting, let alone being a registered adult leader. If you have further information to handout that is pack specific (behavior policy, calendar etc.) this is the time to provide it. Use the Parent & Family talent surveys from the FYR crate. Good evening and welcome everyone. I’d like to welcome you to ______________________________________ Parent Orientation Meeting. I am ___________, and I have been a Scout leader for ___________. I am looking forward to spending some time with you this evening and sharing with you how you can get involved with your son in a great family program. Check to ensure everyone found the Scout shop OK for their son’s uniform and handbook (some packs provide handbooks as part of pack dues).

Our Goals Inform you about how our pack operates Discuss the Cub Scout Advancement Program Discuss Parental Involvement Answer your questions about Scouting Your goal this evening is to accomplish three things: Inform parents about how the pack operates Discuss the Cub Scout Advancement Program Discuss Parental Involvement (recruit leaders) Answer parent questions about Scouting and your pack

A CUB SCOUT PACK SELECT PACKS: Kindergarten Lion Cubs First Graders – Tigers Second Graders – Wolves Third Graders – Bears Fourth & Fifth Graders - Webelos This is just a ‘refresher’ slide to remind them of the grade level programs. Many of the fun things we do in Cub Scouts is done by dens, dens meet a couple times a month. Once a month all of the dens will gather together for a pack meeting.

INTRODUCE PACK LEADERS Cubmaster Committee Chair Committee Members Den Leaders & Webelos Leaders Introduce the key adult leaders in the pack

Every Scouting Unit is “Owned” by an Organization HOW OUR PACK OPERATES Every Scouting Unit is “Owned” by an Organization Scouting has been helping boys have fun and parents guide their children in the right paths for over 100 years. We’re pretty good at what we do! Every Scouting unit is “owned” by a community organization such as a school, church, civic group or group of citizens. Our sponsoring organization is _____________________ Sagamore Council provides program literature and other materials, training for volunteer leadership, insurance, special activities and 2 camps.

How Does it Work? Den Meetings Pack Meetings Special Activities Many of you are beginning to ask, “Well, just how does Cub Scouting work?” Dens - Boys are placed in dens according to grade levels. Dens are typically made up of two adult leaders and 5 to 8 boys. Den meetings normally occur two to three times a month. They are typically 60-90 minutes in length. Packs – Once a month all the dens come together for a pack meeting to recognize the boys for their achievements and let dens show off what they did during the month. Pack meetings are family activities. Special activities [insert your own pack activity info] may include holiday parties, pinewood derby races, community service projects and resident camp to name just a few.

Earn the Ranks of Scouting ADVANCEMENT Earn the Ranks of Scouting Studies show that youth react very well to earned recognition, Scouting does this through badges and awards. A good portion of the rank advancement requirements a boy will work on will be done as part of their den meetings. Some requirements worked on with a parent that focus more on family matters and religious topics. Scouting is a special time to work with your son and actively participate and help him earn his requirements to achieve an advancement rank. Let’s talk for a moment about the advancement program.

BOBCAT – Boys in 1st Grade through 5th grade earn their Bobcat before starting on their rank. TIGER – 6 Required Adventures, than select 1 more for 7 minimum to earn the rank. No matter what age or grade a boy joins Cub Scouting, he must earn his Bobcat badge. This covers the basics of the Cub Scouts like the Oath and Law, and also includes a section where you will discuss youth protection with your son. This rank will go by pretty quickly, and your son will have his first rank in no time! First graders start out as Tiger Cubs. All Tiger Cubs sign up with an adult partner, and tigers are supposed to have an adult partner with them at all meetings and events. Much of the Tiger Cub program is done with adventures to locations where they can learn, such as the fire station, zoos, and more!

2nd year, Focused on Arrow of Light Adventures WOLF - 6 Required Adventures, than select 1 more for 7 minimum to earn the rank. BEAR - 6 Required Adventures, than select 1 more for 7 minimum to earn the rank. WEBELOS – 6 Required Adventures, than select 1 more for 7 minimum to earn the rank. 2nd year, Focused on Arrow of Light Adventures After your second grade Cub Scout has earned his Bobcat badge, he can start along the Wolf trail. He will learn more about his community, spend time practicing speaking in front of others, learn about hiking, and more! Following the Bear track in third grade is fun with 24 choices to pick from. A Bear will spend time learning how to use a pocket knife, reviewing camping basics, and more! Get set for fun and adventure in the Webelos den as a fourth or fifth grader. Everything in the Webelos Scout program is more challenging. Fifth Graders will earn the ultimate rank in Cub Scouts, the arrow of light

Part of the FAMILY of Scouting PACK ORGANIZATION Part of the FAMILY of Scouting The Scouting program is brought to the boys in a simple and sound manner. First, a partnership is formed between the Boy Scouts of America, represented in this area by the Sagamore Council, and a local organization. The Pack is just one part of the Scouting family. There are Boy Scouts for boys 11 – 18 and Venturing which is our co-ed program for 13(and completed the 8th grade) – 21 year olds. Your local pack has many dedicated leaders and will need your assistance in the coming year to provide the best program for your son. Please fill out the Parent & Family Talent Survey we are distributing at this time. (have a pack leader handout the surveys). Our pack relies on parents to run a great program. Please turn this in at the end of our meeting.

FINANCE Registration Fee Dues / Uniform Pack Money Earning Projects: Trail’s End Popcorn Sale “Investing in Character” How is Scouting financed? Every member pays a registration fee which is a pro-rated $27 annually. In September the fee is $12.00. Our pack will ask for rechartering dues in late October- November (Customize for your unit!) Depending on the pack and the den, a boy may pay dues, Families buy the boy’s uniform and personal equipment. A list of local Scout shops and distributors was shared with your at the sign-up night (have additional copies available). Scouts will have an opportunity to earn money and prizes in our council popcorn sale. You should have received a letter describing this sale. This fundraiser is meant to help teach your young man important life skills, help pay for his adventure, and even earn prizes. The council receives its money from the Trail’s-End popcorn sale, our annual “Investing in Character” campaign, grants and a few other sources.

Every youth member deserves a trained leader! TRAINING Every youth member deserves a trained leader! Youth Protection (online) – mandatory for each new leader when registering as an adult leader with the BSA Leader Specific Training – available online and in classroom format Online training is at www.my.scouting.org All unit leaders must be by October 15th! Those of you who become leaders will need to be trained in your position before October 15th. Training is done online and includes Youth protection and Leader Specific training. There are also special sessions scheduled throughout the year for additional training.

CAMPING KEEP THE OUTING IN SCOUTING Welcome to Scouting Cub Haunted Weekend Adventure Camp at Cary Camp Cub Scout Day Camp Pack Camp outs  Review some of the upcoming camping opportunities with your parents at this time. Explain to the parents that unit leaders will sign up the boys, and how sign ups for events are done.   If you pack does family camping, feel free to discuss what you do.

Den Rosters Leader Positions ORGANIZE DENS Den Rosters Leader Positions Den Organizer – you may need several den organizers depending on how many new youth signed-up for Scouting If the parents are grouped by the grade of their boy (like at the joining event) it is easy to talk the parents in this group to coach them in selecting their den leader and assistant. For youth joining existing dens… these dens may need an assistant DL, Introduce self – briefly (1 minute) tell why you’re a Scout leader/How your family has benefited. Set the stage (the object is to get them excited about the fun and opportunities of being a leader, and set their mind at ease concerning the time involvement and difficulty.) Suggested outline and phrases: Many of you tonight will have the opportunity to be leaders in Cub Scouting. State firmly that many people don’t volunteer because they are: Not interested – No time – Don’t know how Counter these reasons with: We know you are interested or you wouldn’t be here Out of 168 hours in the week, you can surely find a few hours to spend with your son and his friends We find time for what’s important to us We will show you what to do at a training session next week (or when your Pack Trainer has it scheduled)

A real opportunity to get PACK LEADERSHIP A real opportunity to get to know your son. On your tables tonight you will find the Pack Leader position descriptions (from the fall youth recruitment crate) Share results of the unit leadership inventory (a form for this is inside the fall youth recruiting guidebook) Appoint a sharp looking parent in each group to be the discussion leader. “I’m going to leave you to determine the best person available to serve as Den Leader, Assistant Den Leader and members of the Parents’ Committee for your den. For your son’s sake, this decision must come from you. When you have reached this decision, let me know and we will register everyone. Leave them. Walk out of the room. Don’t stand around to answer their questions or you will end up trying to select their leaders. If they have questions, answer them briefly and leave the area. In the event a den can’t find the leadership, try this – “I realize you are having difficulty, perhaps all of you work, or have small children, or work shifts. For your son’s sake, please try one more time to solve your problem. Your adult registration includes a subscription to Scouting Magazine (Program Helps are in this magazine), $1 million dollars worth of liability insurance and the council newsletter. SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS ARE MANDATORY on the adult applications (as a pack ensure you safeguard the adult applications until they are turned into the Scout Office) Inform them of going online to take youth protection training which is mandatory for all leaders and can be found at www.MyScouting.org. Provide all new Den Leaders with the New Den Leader orientation kit.

SUPPORTING LEADERS Scouting Magazine is included as part of your registration (includes program helps) Monthly Roundtable Meetings: tenured Cub Scout leaders share their experience on running a quality program & pack University of Scouting(bi-annual November & March supplemental training) Den Meeting Lesson Plans – all available in the Den Leaders Guide Current leaders in our pack mentor new leaders Scouting has been around for over 100 Years! We have loads of experience in helping new leaders provide a great program for the boys! After discussing some of the support for leaders, discuss any unique aspects of how your pack supports new leaders and ensures they are successful.

THANK YOU! After the meeting Collect the adult applications and fees – follow-up with new leaders to ensure they take online youth protection training. Make sure the pack trainer schedules time to meet with new leaders to further orient and train them.
