The Personal Statement – A General Guide This is one of the most important sections of the application. – It is your chance to tell the college why you should be offered a place on the course. You should start off the paragraph by having a sentence telling the college why you have chosen this particular course. e.g. ‘I have chosen this course as I have a great interest in Construction and I would like to continue to study it at College.’ Then continue to talk about what the strengths and skills you have that are relevant to the subject you are applying to. Have a mix of Transferable Skills like: communication, problem solving, teamwork, etc. and skills that are specific to the course subject you want to get a place on. Do you have any relevant experience for the course you are applying for? E.g – your work experience, JET placement, mentoring, anything you’ve done outside of school, etc. that would be relevant? Anything else that you think that might be helpful to include, that you think the college might be looking for? Finish the paragraph with a closing sentence that ends your application nice and neatly. e.g – ‘I believe that this course can help me develop my skills more and also allow me to explore my career interest further.’
