Throughout the School Year and Especially During the Holiday Season Our Schools Host and Promote Community Service Projects To Teach Civic Responsibility and To Engage The Community Blossomwood – The Blossomwood Student Council is hosting a holiday party for 305 8th Street. Students will be providing/serving dinner, singing carols, gifting the residents, and stocking the supply closet for the group home Chaffee – Hosted a canned food drive in conjunction with Red Ribbon Week. Farley - Student Council will be selling snowflakes to display in the front lobby. The money collected from snowflake sales will go towards buying turkey dinners for families in the Farley community. Last year they were able to provide ten families with a turkey dinner for the holidays. Also, Student Council will be collecting can food items for their annual canned food drive. Goldsmith-Schiffman – Goldsmith-Schiffman is holding a Toy Drive to provide toys for students at Montview Elementary who are in need and will donate the remaining toys to The Care Center. Grissom – Civitan Club raised over $4,000 for a surprise gift for approx. 85 well-deserving Community Helpers (it’s a surprise so that’s all we can share right now – stay tuned…) Hampton Cove Middle School - To support deployed soldiers, HCMS brought in a variety of soaps, shampoos and other toiletries to be mailed to them overseas.  Students also voted for their favorite Alabama football team to raise money to mail these items to the soldiers. Jemison – Hosted a Chili Cook-Off fundraiser for Manna House

Giving Back To The Community is Just One of the Many Ways our Students Can Connect With Those In Need and Demonstrate Good Citizenship Columbia HS - Community service is one of the hallmarks of the IB Programme. CHS has participated in the following service activities: Columbia Has Heart Campaign - Varsity Boys Basketball Team participated in a series of community services activities. • Columbia Day at Sparkman Homes - Columbia High School's band, dance team, cheerleaders, boys varsity basketball team and the wrestling team gave back to the community and participated in Columbia Day at Sparkman Homes. Participants entertained, interacted with future Columbia Eagles, and listened to an inspiring message. • The Varsity Boys Basketball Team continued their Columbia Has Heart campaign by volunteering with House of Harvest. IB Day at ASFL - IB students volunteered at ASFL for one day. Students refurbished the school courtyard, read to students, assisted during lunch and assisted with student led conferences. CHS has also collected school supplies to donate to students in Costa Rica and the Spanish Club is currently conducting the Guatemala Shoe Box Project that involves collecting toiletries and other supplies to donate to the needy in Guatemala.

Huntsville City Schools Continues to Engage The Community Via School Service Learning Projects (cont.) Monte Sano - Monte Sano hosts a Pay It Forward activity each month. They collected books for schools in Louisiana during the floods, collected coats for students in need at Williams Elementary and this month they are collecting canned goods Montview – Students will be singing at an assisted living facility on Dec. 9th Mountain Gap - 8th grade students (led by Mrs. Graham, 8th grade English Teacher) collected/donated jackets and blankets for the Syrian refugees in Nashville. The students also wrote letters to the refugees. Included an insert from the Thank You letter sent to Mrs. Graham “Leslie - special thanks to you for leading these kids to be better people, and engage them in volunteering work through school activities. Thank you for the beautiful letter you wrote, I've shared it with some of the families we visited last Saturday, and they appreciate you as well. Receiving the gifts, and hearing the letter gave them a sense of peace and warm welcome in this beautiful country, and hopefully it is a start for a better and safer future for them.” - Thank you again, Talal Kayali
