Artists of the Renaissance Timothy Brallier

Essential question: What kind of art was created during the renaissance and who were the masters?

New forms of Art The renaissance was a time of great change, and saw the emergence of many new ideas and inventions. Among these new arrivals were revolutions in artwork. Two of the greatest artists of this time were Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo. Both were amazing innovators that created pieces of art that were years ahead of their time.

Michelangelo Intro Michelangelo was born in Caprese, Italy, on March 6, 1475. He spent most of his early life in Florence however. From a very early age, he showed natural talents in the arts, and would later become a famous painter, sculptor, and architect.

The Sistine Chapel Some of Michelangelo’s projects were of such grand magnitude that they were deemed impossible until they were finished. One of his greatest works was the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. This massive painting is comprised of various scenes from Genesis, the most famous of which is the Creation of Adam(bottom right).

What was Michelangelo’s art like? Many of Michelangelo’s pieces depicted scenes from the bible or depicted God himself interacting with people. Similar to other Renaissance artists, He put a great deal of realism into his work. In fact, most of his paintings of people were accurate down to the smallest muscle or facial feature. His art also symbolized the joys, struggles, and traits of the human spirit, and how a worthy soul can find it’s way back to God.

Leonardo Da Vinci Intro Leonardo was born in 1452 in Anchiano, Tuscany. He showed a great art talent starting in his teen years, and was apprenticed by Andre del Verrochio. Later in life, he studied mechanical arts as well as painting and sculpture. His knowledge of how things worked would lead him to become a wonderful inventor.

The Bronze Horse Leonardo worked on many magnificent pieces, but perhaps the most magnificent was never completed. The Sforza clan, rulers of Milan at the time, asked Da Vinci to build them a bronze horse statue, standing 16 feet tall. For 12 years he worked on-and-off on this project, until a clay model was ready to be displayed. Sadly, this model was destroyed in a violent conflict that would cause the fall of the Sforza family.

Mona Lisa and The Last Supper Da Vinci’s most famous paintings are without a doubt the Mona lisa and the Last Supper. The mona Lisa was painted between 1503 and 1506, and the Last Supper was painted from 1495 to 1498. Both are examples of the pinnacle of Leonardo Da Vinci’s talent as a visionary artist.

Influence of Renaissance Art Similar to Medieval times, the art of the Renaissance was based mainly around religious figures and faith. The renaissance, however, offered more room for artists to express themselves and to put more realism into their work. This made the pieces more impactful to the viewers, and the artists could put their heart and souls into the pictures as well as paints and oils. Because of this period, art is now a way of life, and not just a profession.

So, that’s what god looks like huh?
